Manchester United Eye Barcelona's Alejandro Balde as Left-Back Target
Manchester United have turned their gaze to Barcelona’s back line, with Alejandro Balde emerging as a serious name on their left‑back shortlist.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that United have already made contact with Balde’s camp in recent days, sounding out whether a move away from Catalonia could even be on the table and what it might take to make it happen. The search for a new left-back has become United’s next priority after wrapping up their deal for Carlos Baleba.
Balde’s situation at Barcelona has shifted over the past year. The 21-year-old endured an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign, losing rhythm at precisely the wrong time. As he worked his way back, João Cancelo forced his way to the front of the queue.
Hansi Flick leaned heavily on Cancelo during the second half of last season, and the Portuguese defender’s permanent return this week has only underlined the hierarchy. If nothing changes, Balde is staring at a season as second choice on the left.
That reality has inevitably sparked questions. Barcelona, La Liga champions and still wrestling with financial constraints, are understood to be open to a sale at the right price. Not pushing him out, but listening.
United have sensed the opening. Romano summed up their stance: the club “keep looking for new left back, next priority after Baleba deal,” with calls already placed to Balde’s representatives to “understand if exit is possible and conditions.”
There is, however, a major obstacle. Balde is described as happy at Barcelona and settled at the Spotify Camp Nou. He has come through the club’s ranks, broken into the first team, and still sees a future there.
So the lines are open, the interest is real, but the player is not agitating for a move. United want a new left-back. Barcelona might sell for the right offer. Balde is content where he is.
Something has to give.
