Manchester United's Battle to Retain 15-Year-Old Prodigy JJ Gabriel

Manchester United are battling to keep hold of one of the most exciting teenagers in their academy, with 15-year-old striker JJ Gabriel attempting to walk away from the club just as his rise was starting to accelerate.

That form pushed him rapidly through the age groups. This term he stepped into the Premier League 2 squad and announced himself with sensational goals in each of his first two games. His impact in Europe was just as sharp: he hit a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut last week, underlining why so many inside the club saw him as the next big academy breakthrough.

First Team Prospects

The pathway to the first team had already started to open. Gabriel made his senior debut in pre-season last month, featuring in the friendly against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, and there was an expectation he would make his competitive bow in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton.

Instead, United are now locked in a battle simply to keep him.
