Manchester United in Talks to Secure Bruno Fernandes as Captain

Manchester United have started preliminary talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, determined to anchor their captain at Old Trafford just as his stock has never been higher.

The club have already lined up a safety net. United intend to trigger the one-year extension clause in the former Sporting CP playmaker’s deal, a move designed to buy time and protect his market value. Without it, the Portugal international would be heading into the final stretch of his current £220,000-a-week contract with only 10 months remaining.

United hold the option to stretch that agreement by a further year, but they do not want to rely on paperwork alone. The aim is clear: secure a fresh, long-term contract before the end of the calendar year and kill off the transfer noise that has stalked their captain for more than a year.

The timing of these talks is no coincidence. Fernandes just delivered another statement performance, smashing a hat-trick and adding an assist in a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town at the weekend. It came only days after he was crowned PFA Player of the Year. If United needed a reminder of his value, he provided it in 90 ruthless minutes.

Rival clubs have noticed. Galatasaray are pushing hard, with reports of a four-year offer on the table that would effectively double his current wages. The Istanbul giants are said to be ready to sweeten the deal with a £3.5m signing-on fee, a sizeable lure for a player entering the final phase of an elite career.

This is not the first time Fernandes has stood at a crossroads. Last summer, he came close to a dramatic switch to the Saudi Pro League. His agent, Miguel Pinho, held high-level talks in Riyadh with Al-Hilal, who were prepared to put an extraordinary £200m, spread over three years, in front of the midfielder.

United resisted then, and their stance has only hardened. Fernandes is still the heartbeat of the side. Since arriving in January 2020, he has produced 110 goals and 109 assists in 329 appearances, numbers that belong to a forward, not a midfielder. Last season he set a new Premier League record with 21 assists, underlining his place among the most inventive players the competition has seen.

Inside the dressing room, he has repeatedly spoken about the demands that come with wearing United’s armband and the standards expected at Old Trafford. On the pitch, he continues to embody them.

The club itself is also in transition. Under Michael Carrick’s leadership, United are trying to shape a new tactical identity, and Fernandes sits at the centre of that project. The structure is built around his creativity, his work-rate, his relentlessness.

To reflect that, United are understood to be ready to make him their highest-paid player. The proposed package would see another year added to his deal and his weekly wage jump to around £350,000.

The question now is not whether United want to keep him. It is whether the captain, with Europe and Saudi Arabia still circling, decides that his future – and his legacy – remain tied to Old Trafford.
