Manchester United's Firm Stance on Bruno Fernandes Transfer

Manchester United have shut the door on any prospect of Bruno Fernandes leaving before next month’s transfer deadline, sending a blunt message to Europe’s suitors: don’t bother asking.

Galatasaray, Juventus and AC Milan have all been weighing up moves for the United captain, with the Turkish champions understood to have prepared an offer that could have risen to 50m euros (£42.7m). They were ready to test United’s resolve.

They have their answer.

Senior figures at Old Trafford have made it clear Galatasaray would be wasting their time, and that stance applies across the board. Club sources insist there have been no formal bids for the 31-year-old, but the line from United is uncompromising – Fernandes is not for sale, at any price.

That represents a sharp change of tone from last summer. Back then, United effectively left the decision in the player’s hands when Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal tabled a huge offer. Fernandes later admitted he felt “hurt” that the club had put the choice on him.

This time, there is no ambiguity. United have nailed their colours to their captain.

Fernandes is entering the final year of his current contract, though United hold an option to extend it by a further season. The Portugal international is known to favour staying, even as talks over a new, longer-term deal have yet to produce an agreement.

A £57m release clause in his contract has now expired, removing one obvious escape route and strengthening United’s position at the negotiating table. They hold the leverage. And they know it.

The mood music around the club only reinforces that stance. In Dublin last week, during a pre-season meeting with Leeds, Fernandes was greeted with a raucous reception from travelling United supporters. The reaction underlined his status as the side’s talisman and creative heartbeat.

Those scenes will not have been lost on the hierarchy. Letting him go now, or even appearing lukewarm about keeping him, would provoke fury in the stands.

On the pitch, the numbers speak loudly enough. Fernandes delivered a Premier League record 21 assists last season, driving United’s attack and shaping games with the consistency of a player operating at the very top of his powers. He is widely expected to be named PFA Player of the Year for 2025-26 at a ceremony in Manchester next week.

United have made their choice. With their captain central to both their football and their identity, this is one cornerstone they are not prepared to move.
