Manchester United's Move for Carlos Baleba Edges Closer

Manchester United’s £70million move for Carlos Baleba is edging closer – and at Brighton, the mood has already shifted.

The Seagulls agreed a £65m fee plus £5m in add-ons with United on Friday for the Cameroon international, who only joined the club last year but has risen quickly enough to command one of the biggest midfield fees of the window.

On the pitch, Brighton brushed aside Aston Villa 4-0 on Sunday. Off it, Fabian Hurzeler sounded like a coach preparing his club for life after another major sale.

Hurzeler’s tone changes

Asked by BBC Radio Sussex after the Villa win whether there was any update on Baleba, Hurzeler kept his cards close but didn’t bother pretending this was business as usual.

"No, I can't tell you anything because we have to wait on how it develops in the next few hours," he said, before widening his focus to what has become Brighton’s reality.

"Overall, we have to understand that it's part of our identity, and that it's part of the journey the club is on. Therefore, I'm not here to complain.

"We all find solutions together, we need to stick together, and we need to face different adversities."

It was a markedly different tone from Friday’s pre-match press conference, when Hurzeler was still batting away questions.

Back then, he said simply: "He's a Brighton player.

"As I said, I'll never comment on any rumours that are currently in the media, it's also something I definitely can't control. A lot of things are written, and I know about situations."

Two days, one heavy win and a £70m agreement later, resignation has replaced resistance.

Danny Welbeck and Jan Paul van Hecke have already gone in this window. Baleba looks set to follow, and Brighton are again leaning into the model that took them this far: develop, sell big, rebuild, repeat.

Brighton’s price point and United’s need

Brighton’s stance last summer was clear. Internally, the message was that Baleba would only leave for “more than Moises Caicedo was sold for.” Caicedo joined Chelsea for a British-record £115m three years ago, setting a benchmark for elite midfield exits from the south coast.

United have not gone that high, but they have pushed hard. Their latest offer was increased by £5m before Brighton accepted the £65m plus £5m structure on Friday.

For a United side accused of lacking legs and bite in midfield, Baleba represents exactly the profile they have been missing: young, aggressive, able to cover ground and press at high speed.

Michael Carrick, though, refused to be drawn into the transfer noise after United’s defeat to Hull City on Saturday.

"I had all eyes on today, so any other player, until he's ours, it's not for me to comment on," he said. The need is obvious. The public acknowledgement will have to wait.

Cascarino: “They didn’t let you breathe”

Outside the two clubs, the move has drawn attention from those who remember a very different Manchester United.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino praised what Baleba could bring to Old Trafford.

"He can get around the pitch, high tempo, pressing, closing down, whatever way you want to look at it," he said.

Cascarino then contrasted that profile with what he saw in United’s limp loss at Hull.

"I played against numerous Manchester United teams. They didn't let you breathe. You went to Old Trafford, you had a tin hat on, and that was basically so you wouldn't get battered, because Manchester United were not only great technically; they also had a great mentality and could fight.

"This team yesterday (against Hull) didn't look like they had any fight in them because that's what the whole city was about, and that's why they got beaten."

United used to suffocate opponents. On Saturday, they were the ones overrun. Baleba, in theory, is a step back towards that relentless identity.

For Brighton, it is another test of theirs. Lose a key piece, cash in big, and still keep marching. How many times can they pull it off before the cycle finally bites?
