Manchester United's Pursuit of Edmond Tapsoba: What It Will Take
Manchester United have been told exactly what it will take to prise Edmond Tapsoba out of Bayer Leverkusen – and it will not be cheap.
The Bundesliga champions are demanding around £43million for their captain, a fee they believe reflects both his importance to Xabi Alonso’s side and the length of his contract, which runs until 2031. Leverkusen do not want to sell. They have, however, made it clear that a “suitable financial offer” would force a decision.
United face Premier League battle
United are not alone at the table. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also in the hunt, with German outlet fussballdaten reporting that all three Premier League clubs are in regular contact with Tapsoba’s camp over the conditions of any move.
The 27-year-old has been described in Germany as “tailor-made” for a side that wants to build from the back at speed and defend big spaces – exactly the kind of profile top-flight clubs now obsess over. Newcastle view him as an instant leader for their back line, while Tottenham have tracked him as they continue reshaping their defence.
For United, the interest is not new. The club were linked with Tapsoba in 2024, only to move for Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt instead. Those deals appeared to close the door on another major centre-back signing in the short term.
Tapsoba’s own stance has kept that door ajar. Reports in Germany suggest his desire for a new challenge has fuelled fresh speculation, even after he committed his future to Leverkusen earlier this year.
Leverkusen’s defensive pillar
On the pitch, Tapsoba has become one of Leverkusen’s most reliable pillars. The Burkina Faso international made 29 Bundesliga appearances last season, scoring five goals – an impressive return for a central defender in a title-winning side.
His mix of composure on the ball, pace across the ground and threat from set pieces has turned him into one of Europe’s more coveted defenders. That is exactly why Leverkusen feel no pressure to budge from their valuation or timeline.
Any club wanting him will need to pay, and pay now.
United’s priorities lie elsewhere – for now
For all the noise around Tapsoba, United’s transfer strategy this summer has been aimed at different areas of the pitch. Michael Carrick has been clear: left-back and central midfield are the main focus.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already arrived to bolster the midfield options at Old Trafford, but United are still open to adding another body in the centre of the park before the window shuts.
On the left side of defence, United’s pursuit has hit resistance. They have long admired Lewis Hall, yet Newcastle have flatly told them the defender is not for sale. A similar stance has come from Club Brugge over Joaquin Seys, who has also been on United’s radar as they look to strengthen their left flank.
The message from potential sellers is consistent. If United want their best players, they will have to fight for them – or look elsewhere.
Carrick wants more
Carrick has not tried to disguise his hunger for further reinforcements.
“We’ve improved the group,” he said. “We’ve improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.
“So the players that we’ve brought in, I think we’ve done really good business and we’ve got some top, top, top players. So we’re delighted with that. We always want to improve.
“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We’re conscious of that and we’ve got to keep pushing.”
The question now is whether that push stretches to a £43m move for a centre-back when other positions are already marked in red on the recruitment board.
If United decide Tapsoba is the final piece of their defensive puzzle, they know the price. The clock, and the competition, will decide how bold they are willing to be.
