Tottenham's Goalkeeper Pursuit: Martinez in Focus

Tottenham are moving fast in the market again – and this time the focus is on the man between the posts.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side, fresh from waving Guglielmo Vicario off to Juventus, have turned their attention to Aston Villa’s World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez as they try to reshape a squad that only just escaped relegation on the final day last season.

Vicario out, Martinez in the frame

The Vicario deal moved quickly. Fabrizio Romano delivered his familiar “here we go” on Monday, confirming that Juventus had struck an agreement with Spurs for the 29-year-old goalkeeper. The move is a loan with an option to buy, not an obligation, but crucially Vicario pushed for the switch and has now left north London.

Romano wrote on X that Tottenham had accepted Juve’s proposal and that Vicario “wanted the move and leaves #THFC today. New goalkeeper for Juventus.”

David Ornstein then backed up the story, adding further detail. He reported that Tottenham had accepted Juventus’ bid – a loan plus an option to buy next summer – and that all parties expect the signing to go through. Crucially, Ornstein noted that Juventus turned to Vicario after calling off their pursuit of Martinez.

That twist has opened a door for Spurs.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have now “made a move” for Martinez, whose own proposed switch to Juventus recently collapsed. De Zerbi’s side are said to be actively exploring a deal for the 33-year-old Argentina international as they look to replace Vicario, despite already having Antonin Kinsky at the club.

Villa ready to listen as Spurs rebuild

Aston Villa, for their part, are understood to be “open” to letting Martinez leave this summer. The reason is simple: they have already lined up his successor.

Unai Emery’s side have sealed a deal for highly rated Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma, and the expectation, again via Football Insider, is that Suzuki will walk straight into the starting XI for the 2026-27 campaign.

That development leaves Martinez poised for a potential move across the Premier League, with Tottenham positioning themselves as a serious option.

For Spurs, the goalkeeping reshuffle is just one strand of a frantic window. The club have already been aggressive, handing De Zerbi a raft of new signings as they try to avoid another season spent staring down the barrel.

  • Andy Robertson has arrived on a free from Liverpool
  • Marcos Senesi has joined after leaving Bournemouth
  • Jan Paul van Hecke has been prised from Brighton for £52m
  • In goal, Martin Dubravka has come in on a free from Burnley
  • Midfield has been dramatically upgraded with Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m
  • Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for £92.5m

This is not tinkering. It is a rebuild driven by the memory of that nerve-shredding final day.

De Zerbi stands firm on Mikey Moore

The overhaul is not just about arrivals. Spurs are also trimming the squad, and one of the more intriguing subplots involves young winger Mikey Moore.

Moore, who spent last season on loan at Rangers, is close to another temporary move – this time to Cologne. BILD Rhineland, via Sport Witness, report that a season-long loan to the Bundesliga side is almost in place.

Almost, but not quite.

De Zerbi is understood to be blocking the move for now. The head coach does not want to sanction Moore’s departure until Tottenham secure their own attacking reinforcements. He wants cover. He wants options. Until that happens, Moore stays put.

Cologne are said to be relaxed about the delay. The expectation is that the loan will still go through later in the window once Spurs complete their business in the final third.

So Tottenham push on: a new spine built at huge cost, a World Cup-winning goalkeeper in their sights, and a gifted youngster temporarily held back while the club hunt for more firepower.

After last season’s brush with disaster, the question is no longer whether they will act. It’s whether this bold, expensive reset is enough to drag Spurs away from the trapdoor for good.
