Manchester United Lead Chase for Edmond Tapsoba Amid Transfer Battle

Manchester United have moved to the front of the queue for Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba, edging ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in one of the Premier League’s key defensive transfer battles.

German outlet Fussball Daten reported earlier this week that all three English clubs had made contact with the centre-back’s representatives to explore a deal. Tapsoba, 27, has grown into one of the standout defenders in the Bundesliga and, after helping Leverkusen to the title, is now firmly on the radar of England’s elite.

The interest is no longer tentative. According to TEAMtalk, United’s talks with Tapsoba’s camp are now the “most advanced”, with the Old Trafford club described as “leading the race” for his signature. Spurs and Newcastle remain in the conversation, but United have pushed harder and earlier.

Leverkusen’s stance is clear. TEAMtalk report that the German champions have slapped a firm €50m (£42.8m / $58.4m) valuation on Tapsoba. They would rather keep him – he signed a contract extension until 2031 earlier this year – but that long deal simply strengthens their hand. A serious offer, at the right price, will be listened to.

The appeal is obvious. Tapsoba is viewed inside Germany as one of the most complete centre-backs in the division: physically dominant, quick across the ground, comfortable building from the back and able to patrol big spaces. He is the modern profile United have lacked for too long.

United’s summer so far has not silenced the doubters. INEOS are trying to close a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba and are also hunting a new left-back, but the need for a centre-half is growing louder. There are concerns over Matthijs de Ligt’s long-term fitness, while Harry Maguire, now 33, could leave at the end of the season.

If Maguire does move on and De Ligt continues to battle physical issues, Michael Carrick’s options at the heart of defence start to look alarmingly familiar. A title-winning defender arriving from the Bundesliga would not just improve the squad – it would address the mounting criticism over United’s reluctance, or inability, to refresh their back line.

That criticism is already spilling into the broadcast studios. Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie O’Hara tore into United’s approach under the new regime.

“I think it’s a disgrace what they’ve done to Carrick,” he said. “They’ve brought him in. They’ve said, ‘We’re going to back you’. They gave him the opportunity. He’s done a fantastic job last season to get them back in the Champions League, and they’ve given him two players.

“Youri Tielemans is alright. Great signing. And Andrey Santos, who’s, you know… we’re not convinced that he’s even a decent player yet.

“Manchester United are miles off it, and we’re talking about them being in the Champions League.

“They’ve got the same back four they had maybe three or four years ago.

“Luke Shaw is going to have another season at left-back. Fair play to him. Harry Maguire at centre-back. Come on.

“Like, we’re talking about Manchester United. They’re meant to be trying to get back amongst it.”

That is the backdrop to the Tapsoba chase. This is not just another name on a long shortlist. For United, beating Spurs and Newcastle to a €50m, title-winning centre-back could be the moment they finally prove they are serious about rebuilding a defence that has stood still for far too long.
