Manchester United Eye David Raum as Left-Back Solution

Manchester United have turned their attention to RB Leipzig defender David Raum as they scramble for a late solution at left-back, but there is hesitation at Old Trafford over committing serious money to a 28-year-old in the final year of his contract.

United have already thrown close to £150m at their midfield rebuild this summer, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. The spine has been reinforced. The flanks have not.

Left-back remains a glaring issue. Luke Shaw’s injury record means he cannot be relied upon across a full season, and that reality has pushed the club back into the market.

Hall off the table, Raum on the list

Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall has long been viewed as United’s preferred option for the role. Young, homegrown, technically gifted – he ticks every modern full-back box. But any deal for Hall is effectively shut down for this window, even with the player understood to be open to the move.

That setback has forced United to look elsewhere. In Germany, one name keeps circling back: David Raum.

According to BILD, relayed by Sport Witness, the Germany international is on United’s left-back shortlist. Raum produced ten goal involvements in the Bundesliga last season and, crucially, is entering the final 12 months of his Leipzig deal. That contract situation has put him firmly in the shop window.

Raum himself has not hidden from the reality of his position. “I’m now heading into the final year of my contract,” he said earlier this week. “I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”

Leipzig’s price and United’s dilemma

Leipzig are said to be aiming for a fee of around €40m for Raum. Internally, they are aware that the clock on his contract weakens their hand and may force them to accept less.

United, though, are described as “dithering” over whether to commit what is seen as a relatively large outlay on a player approaching 30, especially when a younger option with greater resale value might yet emerge. The tension is clear: proven quality now, or potential for later?

Time, however, is not on their side.

Romano: United “can guarantee” a left-back push

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano expects United’s final days of the window to be active, particularly in this position.

“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back.”

United have explored high-end options. Alejandro Balde was discussed in a recent call with agent Jorge Mendes, but the numbers quickly killed that idea. “Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now,” Romano explained.

That has pushed the club towards a more pragmatic route. Romano drew a parallel with the short-term signing of Sergio Reguilon – a functional, experienced solution rather than a marquee name.

“I would not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee,” he said. “Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile.”

Raum fits that description almost perfectly: seasoned, international, attack-minded, available.

United now face a straight choice in the final days of the window: pay up for a ready-made, late-peak full-back like Raum, or gamble again on patching together a season at left-back and hope the opportunity they really want appears next summer.
