Manchester United vs Hull City: Premier League Opening Day Preview

Manchester United step back into the Premier League spotlight this afternoon, opening their 2026/27 campaign away at newly promoted Hull City – and Michael Carrick is not treating it like a gentle warm-up.

Champions League football is back on the calendar at Old Trafford. Expectations have risen with it. On the face of it, a trip to face last season’s Championship play-off winners looks kind, but Carrick has already warned against any complacency. Hull, he reminded everyone on Thursday, are not here to make up the numbers.

Carrick leans on continuity at the back

United are expected to go strong from the first whistle. Senne Lammens has the gloves and will start in goal, entrusted again to anchor a side with serious ambitions on multiple fronts.

At right-back, Diogo Dalot’s grip on the position remains firm. He finished last season as the clear first choice and Carrick is keen to keep as much continuity as possible in his defensive line.

The big talking point over the summer has been at centre-back. Ayden Heaven’s emergence as a preferred option over Leny Yoro in pre-season raised more than a few eyebrows, but Carrick has stuck with the former Arsenal youngster. Heaven is set to line up at the MKM Stadium alongside Harry Maguire, whose experience still carries weight in this squad, with Luke Shaw completing the back four on the left.

Midfield reshuffle after Mount setback

Midfield is where Carrick has had to improvise. Mason Mount, so sharp in pre-season and building a promising partnership with Andrey Santos, is unlikely to be risked after picking up a knock against Paris Saint-Germain. Carrick would have wanted him in from the start; instead, he has to rip up that plan on the eve of the campaign.

The pressure on Santos, then, ramps up. The Brazilian is in line for his Premier League debut on Humberside and will be asked to slot straight into the rhythm of United’s passing game. Alongside him, Youri Tielemans is expected to become the second debutant of the afternoon, offering craft and control in Mount’s absence.

Rashford waits as left-wing battle heats up

Marcus Rashford’s name has hovered over United’s summer like a storm cloud. An exit never materialised, and as the club insisted it would, he has been brought back into the fold, featuring in the final friendly against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan. Even so, his late return to pre-season leaves Carrick with a decision. Throw him straight in, or ease him back?

For now, caution wins. Rashford is set to start on the bench, just as it would be a gamble to start Kobbie Mainoo so soon. Both should be options later in the game, but not from kick-off.

Their absence from the XI clears the stage on the left wing. Matheus Cunha made that role his own last season while Patrick Dorgu was sidelined, but the picture has shifted. Carrick has spent the summer reintroducing Dorgu to that position, and the Dane responded with a goal against Milan. The momentum is his. He is expected to get the nod ahead of Cunha in one of the tightest selection calls of the day.

Sesko held back as Mbeumo leads the line

Up front, there is good news tempered by realism. Benjamin Sesko is back in full training, a significant boost for United’s attacking options over the longer haul. But he missed the entire pre-season schedule, and Carrick is not about to throw him straight into a Premier League opener without minutes in his legs.

That leaves the centre-forward role to be decided between Bryan Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee. The call looks made. Mbeumo, with his movement and work rate, is set to spearhead the attack ahead of Zirkzee, giving United a mobile focal point to press Hull high and stretch their back line.

A newly promoted side at home, a Champions League contender looking to make a statement, and a manager juggling fitness, form and expectation. For Carrick and United, this is more than just an opening day. It’s the first test of whether they can live up to a season that suddenly feels bigger than the last.
