Manchester United's Pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite Amid Defensive Rebuild

Manchester United have turned the spotlight firmly on Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite as Michael Carrick pushes for major defensive reinforcements at Old Trafford, according to Football Insider.

Four games into the new Premier League season, United’s back line already looks fragile. Carrick wants an elite organiser at the heart of his defence. Inside the club, many believe Branthwaite could be that cornerstone for the next decade.

The 24-year-old has sat near the top of United’s recruitment list for some time, his emergence on Merseyside catching the eye with a blend of composure, physicality and left-footed balance that is hard to find at the top level.

United scouts on long-term mission

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has confirmed that the club’s talent spotters are now tracking Branthwaite closely following his return to David Moyes’ starting XI.

Clubs had cooled their interest after a brutal 2025-26 campaign in which recurring hamstring issues forced Branthwaite to miss 31 games across all competitions. That injury record is now central to United’s calculations.

Brown made it clear this is not a short-term glance, but a season-long examination.

“Branthwaite is somebody who has been high on their list for a long time,” Brown said. “Man United are going to have scouts watching him closely this season, because if he can get back to the sort of form he’s shown before, he will certainly be an option.”

The plan is simple: monitor his durability and performance levels from now until May. Only then will United decide whether to move.

Everton stand firm – for now

Any January deal is viewed as highly improbable. Everton have no intention of losing one of their most valuable assets halfway through the campaign.

The Toffees have already beaten back heavyweight interest. Real Madrid and Manchester City both circled previously, only for Everton to lock Branthwaite down on a lucrative contract extension running to 2030.

That deal gives Everton huge leverage. It does not, however, completely close the door.

Inside Old Trafford, there is a belief that if Branthwaite stays fit and maintains his level, a summer move could be prised open. Not easily. Not cheaply. But not impossibly.

For now, Moyes leans heavily on the defender’s partnership with James Tarkowski to keep Everton’s shape intact. Break that pairing in mid-season and the entire structure of his side changes. That is a risk Everton are unwilling to take.

Summer test of Everton’s resolve

United know the timing. A mid-season raid is off the table, so the focus is on the end of the campaign, when budgets, form and pressure all collide.

By then, Carrick and his recruitment team expect to have a full dossier on Branthwaite’s physical resilience and consistency. If the data matches the eye test and the defender strings together a full, dominant season under Moyes, United are expected to formalise their interest.

Everton’s stance is clear. United’s intent is becoming clearer.

In the background, Old Trafford staff continue to draw up alternative defensive targets, unwilling to gamble everything on one player’s fitness. Yet as the season unfolds, one question will linger over both clubs: if Branthwaite gets through it unscathed and in command, how long can Everton realistically keep him out of United’s reach?
