Manchester United Faces JJ Gabriel Departure Amid Boardroom Turmoil

Manchester United could lose teenage talent JJ Gabriel to Spanish giants Real Madrid or Barcelona for a fraction of his potential value, just as pressure intensifies on the club’s hierarchy and manager Michael Carrick.

The 15-year-old forward has already told United he wants out. Earlier this week, Gabriel formally requested the immediate cancellation of his registration so he can become a free agent, opening the door for Europe’s elite to move.

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed on August 13 that United were increasingly concerned about Gabriel’s future, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both tracking the youngster.

Those concerns have now hardened into reality. Bailey reported on September 18 that Gabriel has held talks with both clubs, and sources indicate those conversations have gone well.

If he does sign for either Barcelona or Madrid, United will receive only around £300,000 in compensation, according to The Daily Mail – a modest figure for a player regarded as one of the brightest prospects in their academy.

Gabriel holds an Irish passport, which means he will be free to move abroad when he turns 16 on October 6. The clock is ticking, and United know it.

Wilcox stands by Carrick as boardroom doubts emerge

While United risk losing a rising star for a minimal fee, turbulence continues at the top of the club.

On September 17, Bailey reported that the club’s hierarchy have decided to keep Michael Carrick in charge. The INEOS-led ownership have no immediate plans to sack the manager, despite a poor start to the Premier League season – just four points from four games – and a League Cup exit at Old Trafford to Brighton and Hove Albion this week.

Inside the club, director of football Jason Wilcox is said to be firmly behind Carrick. According to prominent United fan, YouTuber and presenter Mark Goldbridge, Wilcox is backing the former midfielder to lead the project long term, even if not everyone in the boardroom agrees.

Goldbridge, who has over 1.1 million followers on X, claimed on Tuesday morning that “someone on the board isn’t convinced by Carrick,” before making it clear that Wilcox is not that figure. He described Wilcox as “firmly with Carrick” and argued United should stick with his managerial choice.

His posts also turned the spotlight back on Wilcox himself, questioning why the director of football remains so influential after a turbulent spell. Since arriving in April 2024, Wilcox has already overseen the dismissals of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, while his remit includes being close to training and supporting Carrick on coaching and recruitment.

The result is a club trying to project stability in public while whispers of internal disagreement grow louder.

Tuchel unimpressed with Maguire’s public frustration

Away from Old Trafford but still circling around United, Harry Maguire’s international future remains under scrutiny – and his manager is not impressed.

England boss Thomas Tuchel left the Manchester United centre-back out of his squad for the 2026 World Cup finals in the summer. Maguire has not been recalled for the latest England squad for the September and October international fixtures either.

The defender went public with his disappointment at missing the World Cup squad, comments that have not gone down well with Tuchel. Asked whether Maguire’s reaction has made it harder to select him again, Tuchel did not hide his irritation.

“It doesn’t help. It does not help,” he said, as quoted by The Mirror. He added that while he would not hold the incident against Maguire “for the rest of his life” and could “forget easily and quickly,” he “didn’t like it and it doesn’t help.”

For United, the picture is stark. A prized academy talent is edging towards Spain for a cut-price fee, the manager’s backing is strong but not unanimous, and a senior defender finds himself out of favour with his country.

The decisions they make in the coming weeks will shape far more than one transfer window.
