Manchester United Make Last-Minute Push for Barcelona's Alejandro Balde on Transfer Deadline Day

Manchester United are making a final effort to sign Alejandro Balde, the Barcelona left-back, as they try to complete a surprising transfer before the summer window closes. Manager Michael Carrick is eager to strengthen his squad, particularly at the left-back spot.

Late Defensive Reinforcement Sought by Red Devils

The Red Devils have reignited their interest in Balde, with reports from Gerard Romero’s Jijantes FC indicating that Manchester United have made a new offer in an attempt to secure the defender’s signature. The club has already invested heavily this summer, spending around £150 million primarily to overhaul their midfield, bringing in players like Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba.

Despite these additions, the left-back position remains a major concern for the coaching staff as the transfer deadline looms.

Earlier this window, Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall was targeted but Newcastle refused to sell the young England international, forcing United to explore other options.

Talks with Jorge Mendes and Barcelona’s Position

United's interest in Balde is not new. They held initial talks with his agent, Jorge Mendes, towards the end of August. At first, it seemed Balde would stay at Barcelona to compete for playing time under coach Hansi Flick. Yet, his situation has worsened recently.

Although he was included in the squad against Rayo Vallecano, Balde has not played any competitive minutes this season. The rise of 19-year-old Xabi Espart, who started all three league matches so far, has complicated Balde’s chances. Additionally, the arrival of Joao Cancelo on a free transfer has given Flick another solid option at full-back, further limiting Balde’s opportunities.

Financial Challenges and Loan vs Permanent Deal

The main sticking point is the deal's structure and cost. Manchester United prefer a loan deal to cover the current season, but Barcelona wants a permanent sale to improve their finances. The La Liga side values Balde at around £34 million and insists on a permanent transfer.

Alternatives Explored But Dropped

While searching for backups, United ruled out signing Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. Though Salinas has a modest release clause of £13 million, the club decided not to pursue him now. Racing has already replaced Salinas by signing Aaron Martin from Genoa, but Manchester United remains focused on Balde.
