Manchester United's Left-Back Search Hits Roadblock with Joaquin Seys
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has hit a major roadblock, with Club Brugge making it clear that Joaquin Seys is going nowhere this summer.
United want to strengthen Michael Carrick’s options on the left side of defence before the window shuts, but their interest in Seys has run into a brick wall. In Belgium, the message from Brugge is blunt: the 21-year-old is not for sale, even for a record fee.
Seys has become too important to lose. He has started all three of Brugge’s games this season after a standout campaign last term, when he made 55 appearances, scored five goals and delivered eight assists. He is now firmly embedded in the side, and the Jupiler League club see him as central to their plans.
United have not yet lodged a formal bid, but the stance from Brugge is already set. Even an offer in line with the £34million Arsenal paid earlier in the summer for Christos Tzolis would not move the needle. The Belgian club are ready to turn down that level of money to keep their left-back.
Seys’ rise has naturally attracted a crowd. Arsenal, Aston Villa and Newcastle have all been linked, as have Benfica and Porto. For now, though, any suitors will have to wait. With three years left on his contract, Brugge hold all the cards.
That resolve comes despite previous comments from boss Ivan Leko, who has admitted the financial pull of big offers can be hard to ignore.
“If there’s a lot of money on the table, it’s obviously not easy to say no. The board’s aim is still to build a team that’s even better than last season,” Leko said. “The right time to leave will come. Tzolis has proved that. Let’s hope they’re all still here in September.”
United, meanwhile, are under pressure to act. Carrick’s squad is light at left-back. Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract, while Patrick Dorgu is now seen more as an option higher up the pitch than as a traditional full-back.
Seys is the second left-back this summer to be effectively taken off the market as far as United are concerned. Newcastle have already rebuffed attempts to sign Lewis Hall, shutting down that avenue.
Attention may now turn more seriously to Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. The 19-year-old, another left-sided option, has a release clause in his contract, a detail that makes any potential deal far more straightforward than the Seys pursuit.
United still want a left-back. The clock is ticking. The question now is whether they pivot quickly enough to land one before the window slams shut.
