Manchester United's Next Steps for JJ Gabriel and Harry Amass After U-21 Win

Manchester United’s academy conveyor belt showed its teeth again on Monday night – and now the club must decide what comes next for two of its brightest prospects.

A ruthless 5-0 dismantling of Ipswich Town in Premier League 2 at Leigh Sports Village gave JJ Gabriel and Harry Amass the stage. They didn’t waste it.

Amass impresses – but could still leave on loan

Harry Amass has spent the summer in the shadows of Luke Shaw, but not quietly. The 19-year-old left-back has been a regular presence around the first-team group in pre-season, building on an eye-catching loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last year.

That campaign lost momentum after a January switch to Norwich City was derailed by injury, yet Michael Carrick’s faith in the defender has not dimmed.

“I've been really pleased with Harry,” Carrick said. “I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens. But he played really well the other night.”

The twist? Despite United failing to bring in a new left-back this summer, Amass could still walk out of the door before Tuesday’s deadline – on a temporary basis.

Carrick admitted a loan move is on the table and, at this stage of the window, increasingly likely.

“It comes to this stage of the window, and there's always a little bit where, and this is not just Harry by the way, this is just the stage of the window and putting squads together and dynamics of changes, and younger players and loans and not loans, and all sorts of different scenarios.

“I think we always try to do the best for each individual player, as well as keeping the group strong.”

United’s dilemma is clear. Keep Amass as cover in a key position, or send him out again to play every week and accelerate his development. His performance against Ipswich only sharpened that decision.

JJ Gabriel announces himself

If Amass represented the steady, polished side of United’s youth system, JJ Gabriel brought the spark.

On his competitive debut for the U-21s, the 15-year-old delivered the kind of performance that makes coaches sit up: a stunning goal, two assists, and a constant threat.

Carrick was in the stands at Leigh Sports Village and left thoroughly encouraged.

“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” he said. “Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see the quality. I really enjoyed the game.

“Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good. So, really encouraged by that.”

Gabriel stood out even in that dominant display.

“JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development.”

At 15, he is already training regularly with older age groups, adjusting to the physical demands and speed of the game. The Ipswich rout felt like a marker – the night he turned promise into end product on a bigger stage.

Two talents, two different paths

United now face contrasting calls on two players at very different stages of their journey.

Amass is on the verge of senior football, close enough to feel it, and a loan before the deadline could define his season. Gabriel is at the start of the road, being carefully nudged up the ladder, step by step.

Both, though, have forced their way into the conversation.

On a dominant night for United’s U-21s, it wasn’t just the scoreline that mattered. It was the sense that, behind the first team’s noise and the transfer-window scramble, the next generation is already banging on the door.
