Manchester United Pursue Baleba as Brighton Talks Progress

Manchester United are pushing hard to land Brighton midfielder Baleba, with negotiations between the clubs described as calm, constructive and edging towards a conclusion.

United have tabled an opening bid of around £60 million (€70m) plus a further £5m in potential add-ons, according to The Athletic. Brighton, true to form in the market, believe that figure falls short of their valuation, but the dialogue has not broken down. Far from it. Both sides remain locked in talks, working to bridge the gap on price rather than walking away from the table.

This is not a luxury chase for United. It is a priority.

United’s midfield rebuild in full swing

Midfield has been the main surgery point at Old Trafford this summer. The club have already moved decisively for Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, reshaping the core of Michael Carrick’s side.

One deal, though, never made it off the operating table. United had agreed terms with Atalanta for Ederson, only to pull the plug over concerns about a knee problem flagged during checks. That decision sharpened the need for another midfield arrival.

They then went after Elliot Anderson, only to watch the England international choose the blue half of Manchester and sign for rivals Manchester City. Another reminder that this window has demanded both patience and flexibility from United’s recruitment team.

Injuries have only heightened the urgency. Manuel Ugarte picked up a problem while on World Cup duty with Uruguay, while Mason Mount missed United’s final two pre-season fixtures. With competitive games closing in, Carrick’s options in the middle suddenly look thinner than planned.

Baleba’s rise at Brighton

Baleba’s emergence at Brighton has made him one of the most coveted young midfielders in the league. Signed from Lille in the summer of 2023, he has quickly become a central figure on the south coast.

The 22-year-old has already racked up 112 appearances in all competitions for Brighton, a remarkable workload for a player of his age. Last season alone he featured 35 times, his rhythm interrupted only briefly by his call-up with Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Brighton know exactly what they have: a powerful, athletic midfielder who can handle both sides of the game and has already proved he can cope with the Premier League’s intensity. That explains their hard stance on valuation. It also explains why United are so insistent on getting this done.

How Baleba would fit at Old Trafford

If the deal goes through, Baleba will walk into a fiercely competitive midfield unit. Tielemans, Santos, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes are already jostling for places in Carrick’s starting XI.

Baleba would not arrive as a squad filler. He would be expected to challenge immediately, adding energy and defensive presence alongside the technical control already in the building. For Carrick, who built his playing reputation on balance and intelligence in midfield, the blend is starting to look intriguing.

United want him in the door quickly. With pre-season wrapped up and the first meaningful whistle of the campaign fast approaching, the club are keen to give the Cameroonian time to settle, learn Carrick’s demands and integrate with his new teammates.

For now, the talks go on. United and Brighton remain in active, positive contact, both sides working towards a final figure that suits everyone. Confidence is high that an agreement will eventually be struck.
