Manchester United's Pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni: Hope Remains

Manchester United refuse to give up on Aurelien Tchouameni – even a new Real Madrid contract has not completely shut the door.

Michael Carrick’s side have already moved decisively in midfield. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after United activated the £45 million release clause in his deal. Two signings, two different profiles, but the message is clear: United’s rebuild under INEOS runs straight through the centre of the pitch.

Yet they still want one more. The one.

Tchouameni: The dream that won’t die

Aurelien Tchouameni has sat at the top of United’s wish list for a long time. Fabrizio Romano has repeatedly described the France international as a dream signing for the club’s new co-owners, and it is not hard to see why.

At 26, he is already one of the standout defensive midfielders in world football. He has anchored France through another deep run at the 2026 World Cup, with Les Bleus into the semi‑finals and chasing the trophy that slipped from their grasp in 2022. His CV at club level is just as sharp: LaLiga and Champions League titles with Real Madrid, plus the UEFA Nations League with France in 2021.

On paper, the story should have ended last week. Tchouameni agreed a new contract at the Bernabeu, tying him to Madrid until 2031. Long deal, peak-age player, elite club. End of speculation.

Not quite.

“They could still sell him”

Andy Mitten, the well-connected journalist who has covered Manchester United for years, has poured fresh fuel on the story. Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, he revealed that contacts close to Madrid are not ruling out a sale, even after the renewal.

Mitten said he reached out to a source in Madrid after news of the contract broke and read back the key line he received: “They could still sell him.” The message was repeated. The door, however narrow, remains ajar.

This is not a new dynamic for United. Mitten pointed out that Real Madrid players have benefitted before from Old Trafford’s interest, using it as leverage for better terms. Tchouameni has clearly done well out of his extension. But that does not automatically guarantee he will see it out in Spain.

United, for their part, have not hidden their admiration. As Mitten put it, they were interested “because he’s very good.” He also stressed that Tchouameni is “perfectly happy in Madrid” but would be “perfectly happy to play for Manchester United” if the situation changed.

That line matters. The player is not agitating for a move, but he is not closing the door on one either.

Madrid’s need to “sell big”

The real twist lies in Madrid’s wider strategy. Mitten relayed what he was told when he made more calls, this time to journalists covering the Spanish national team in the United States: Real Madrid want to buy big, so they need to sell big.

That is the calculation. To fund another marquee arrival, someone of serious value has to go.

Who? Fede Valverde has been told he is in line to be captain. As Mitten joked, if Valverde is not keen, Old Trafford would welcome him too. Eduardo Camavinga, though talented, would not command the same fee as Tchouameni. That leaves the Frenchman right in the financial crosshairs: elite, in his prime, and capable of generating the kind of money Madrid might need.

So the new contract does not close the market. It protects Madrid’s position in it.

United’s improbable hope

Mitten did not dress it up. Asked directly whether there is a chance for United, he called it “improbable” and said it always looked that way. Any move depends on Madrid making a hard decision: sacrificing one of their very best players to bankroll the next phase of their project.

If they do, United will be ready. INEOS want a statement midfielder. Carrick wants a long-term anchor at the base of his side. Tchouameni fits both briefs in a way few others can.

For now, it is a waiting game. A long contract in Madrid, a World Cup campaign with France, and a transfer window that still has time to twist.

If Real Madrid really do need to sell big, the question is not whether Tchouameni is good enough for Manchester United – it is whether they are willing to pay the kind of price that finally forces Madrid’s hand.
