Manchester United Reject Djed Spence as Inter Milan Finalizes £30m Deal

Manchester United’s search for a new full-back has taken another twist – and this time, it ends in Milan, not Manchester.

With Luke Shaw’s recurring fitness issues unsettling the new INEOS regime, United have been scouring the market for cover on the left side of defence and have been strongly linked with a move for Lewis Hall. Newcastle United’s hardline stance has complicated that pursuit, forcing the 20-time English champions to scan a crowded full-back market for alternatives.

One of those alternatives, Djed Spence, will not be heading to Old Trafford.

United walk away from Spurs’ price

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham Hotspur offered the England international to several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, after his standout World Cup performances. Spurs set an asking price of around £45 million and made the same pitch to Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Everton.

There was interest. There was no deal.

Clubs, United included, balked at the valuation. The £45m figure was widely viewed as excessive, and negotiations never caught fire.

That decision looks even more pointed now.

Inter strike a cheaper deal

Sky Sports report that Inter Milan have agreed a £30m deal with Tottenham for Spence, a full-back capable of operating on either flank. The agreement includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause, but the headline number is what will sting at Old Trafford.

Once again, it underlines a familiar theme: when Manchester United enter the room, the price tends to rise. Inter, operating without that premium, are set to land the 26-year-old for £15m less than Spurs initially wanted from English rivals.

Spence will now prepare for Serie A, not the Premier League reboot many expected.

INEOS hold firm as Hall remains the priority

United’s refusal to move for Spence is not an isolated call. The club also turned down the chance to sign highly rated Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly, another signal that the recruitment team still believe Lewis Hall can be prised away from Newcastle.

That belief is shaping the entire strategy.

At the same time, the club is braced for change in its own youth ranks, with academy left-back Harry Amass expected to depart. The pathway at full-back is being redrawn, but INEOS are determined not to panic.

They have drawn up a list of lower-cost alternatives to Hall, with David Raum, Jorge Salinas and Joaquin Seys all identified as options if Newcastle refuse to soften their stance.

United’s message is clear: they will not be bounced into overpaying, even for an England international in a problem position. The question now is whether that resolve delivers the left-back they want – or leaves them short when the season kicks off.
