Manchester United Sign Baleba for £70m as Carrick Rebuilds Midfield

Manchester United have finally got their man. The Red Devils have completed the signing of Brighton midfielder Baleba in a deal worth up to £70 million, a statement move in a summer built around fixing the spine of Michael Carrick’s team.

United will pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m tied to performance-related add-ons. The 22-year-old Cameroon international has signed on at Old Trafford until 2031, with the club holding an option to extend for an extra year. It is a long-term bet, and an expensive one, on a player they have tracked for some time.

This is not a panic buy. It’s the end of a chase.

Long pursuit finally pays off

Baleba has been on United’s radar for years, with links to Old Trafford stretching back to his early days in England. He joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 for an initial £23.2m and has since stacked up three full Premier League seasons, growing from raw prospect into one of the division’s most dynamic young midfielders.

United’s recruitment team have been regulars in the stands for his games. Now they have moved decisively, completing a midfield overhaul that has already seen Andrey Santos arrive from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

Baleba’s signing is the headline act of that rebuild. The fee says as much. So does the contract length.

Fernandes welcomes “energetic” partner

Inside the dressing room, the move has landed well. Club captain Bruno Fernandes, speaking at the PFA Awards after being named the 2026 Players’ Player of the Year, made no secret of his enthusiasm.

"He's a very energetic player. Strong physically, he can push us up the pitch driving the ball," Fernandes said. "Young and exciting, the club have been following him for two years."

Those are not throwaway lines. Fernandes has often been left carrying too much creative and physical burden in United’s midfield. Baleba, with his power and ability to drive through the thirds, is being brought in to change that equation.

From Brighton project to United cornerstone

At Brighton, Baleba learned the hard yards of Premier League life. Three seasons, multiple systems, high-intensity football. He arrives at Old Trafford not as a gamble from abroad, but as a player already tested against the league’s demands.

For United, that matters. This is not a window for slow-burn projects. It is one for instant impact.

The club have now assembled a new-look midfield core: Baleba, Santos, Tielemans and Fernandes. On paper, it offers energy, control, and creativity. On the pitch, it has to deliver quickly.

Response to a stuttering start

The urgency is clear. United opened their league campaign with a flat 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City, a result that sharpened the mood around Carrick’s early-season plans.

Santos and Tielemans both started that game alongside Fernandes, but the balance never quite clicked. United looked vulnerable without the ball and short of thrust with it. The performance underlined what the recruitment team already knew: one more midfielder was needed, and he had to bring presence as well as promise.

Now Baleba walks into that context. His integration will not be gentle. Carrick needs him to slot in fast, to add legs, aggression and vertical running to a midfield that too often drifts through games.

The price tag, the contract, the timing – they all say the same thing. United have built their new engine room. Now the question is simple: can Baleba be the driving force that finally gets their season moving?
