Manchester United Target Alejandro Balde as Barcelona Exit Looms
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a dramatic twist, with Alejandro Balde now pushing to leave Barcelona before the end of the summer window.
Spanish outlet Jijantes report that Balde has decided to move on from the Catalan giants, with his agent Jorge Mendes already working behind the scenes to secure his next club. That decision has immediately thrown United into the conversation.
Flick’s Barcelona plans leave Balde sidelined
Balde played a key role in Barcelona’s success last season. The 22-year-old featured 42 times in all competitions, helping the club lift both the La Liga title and the Supercopa de Espana. He looked like part of the long-term core.
Hansi Flick sees it differently.
The new Barcelona head coach does not consider Balde central to his future plans, and the full-back is expected to see his first-team minutes sharply reduced this season. With his pathway blocked at Camp Nou, the Spain international has chosen to look elsewhere.
That choice could reshape United’s summer.
United’s left-back puzzle
Erik ten Hag needs help on the left side of his defence. Tyrell Malacia has departed on a free transfer, while Patrick Dorgu is viewed primarily as an option higher up the pitch on the left wing rather than as a specialist full-back.
Luke Shaw remains the undisputed first-choice left-back, but his workload has been heavy and his injury record a concern. United want a player who can share that responsibility and maintain the same level of intensity when Shaw is unavailable.
They have identified Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as an ideal fit. The 21-year-old, though, is expected to stay at St James’ Park. Hall is in talks over a new contract and has been offered a place within the club’s leadership group under manager Matthias Jaissle, a sign of how highly Newcastle value him.
With Hall likely off the table, the market looked tight. Then Balde’s stance changed.
A ready-made solution?
Balde offers something rare: youth, elite experience and a profile tailored to the modern full-back role. At just 22, he has already made 168 senior appearances for Barcelona, a remarkable total at a club of that size and expectation.
He is known for his blistering pace, sharp dribbling and ability to carry the ball through the thirds. Those traits fit naturally into United’s preferred high-tempo, front-foot approach, especially when they look to overload the flanks and break quickly in transition.
For a club searching for a long-term partner and competitor for Shaw, the opportunity is obvious.
The question now is just how aggressively United move, and whether Barcelona’s loss becomes the defining defensive signing of United’s summer.
