Marc Guiu Joins RB Leipzig After Chelsea Exit

Chelsea have agreed to sell Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig in a permanent deal, drawing a swift and slightly surprising line under the Spanish striker’s time at Stamford Bridge.

The move was put together in the shadows. Talks between Chelsea and Leipzig stayed off the radar until Friday evening, when Fabrizio Romano broke cover with his trademark “here we go”, confirming that an agreement had been reached on both club and player side.

Guiu is now expected to travel to Germany to complete his medical and sign his contract before the window shuts. The fee remains undisclosed, but Chelsea have inserted a sell-on clause, protecting a slice of any future profit. It fits the pattern: the club had previously asked for around €25 million in discussions with other sides and insisted on a sell-on in every scenario.

From La Masia Hope to Chelsea Detour

Guiu arrived in west London from Barcelona in July 2024, Chelsea triggering his €6 million release clause to prise him away from La Masia. He did not come as an unknown. He had already scored on his Barcelona first-team debut against Athletic Club in October 2023 and later found the net in the Champions League.

Chelsea offered him flashes, not a platform. When the chances came, he showed why clubs had queued up. He hit a first-half hat-trick against Shamrock Rovers in the 2024-25 UEFA Conference League and added another goal against Ajax in the Champions League. The penalty area instincts were obvious; a regular Premier League role was not.

Competition for minutes, constant churn in the squad, and the demands of a club chasing immediate results meant Guiu never fully settled into a starting berth.

A Loan, a Recall, and a Dead End

The search for game time took him to Sunderland on loan in August 2025. It looked like the right move: a traditional club, a demanding environment, and the promise of minutes. It lasted only weeks. Liam Delap’s injury forced Chelsea into a swift recall, and Guiu returned to find the same traffic jam in attack.

He picked up several more appearances but never nailed down a consistent place. By the start of the 2026-27 season, under new head coach Xabi Alonso, the writing was on the wall. Chelsea strengthened again in forward areas and left Guiu without even a squad number as they trimmed the group.

At that point, a permanent exit stopped being a possibility and started to look like the only logical outcome.

Leipzig Move Offers a Clear Path

RB Leipzig have stepped in with the kind of project that has become their trademark. The Bundesliga club have built a reputation for recruiting young forwards, giving them real minutes, and polishing them into high-value assets.

Guiu, at 1.89m, brings presence, strength, and aerial threat. For Leipzig, he fits the profile. For the player, it offers something he has lacked since leaving Barcelona: a defined pathway into regular senior football.

Chelsea, meanwhile, secure a financial return on a short-term investment and keep a percentage of any future sale through the sell-on clause. For a club constantly managing squad size and balance under a new coach, it is a clean break with upside attached.

Napoli, City Interest Fades as Leipzig Strike

Before Leipzig moved decisively, Napoli had pushed hardest. The Serie A club were strongly linked and had reportedly agreed personal terms with Guiu, but they never bridged the gap with Chelsea over his valuation. Manchester City kept an eye on developments, while Sevilla explored the idea of taking him back to Spain on loan.

None of those routes opened. Leipzig’s offer did, and Chelsea’s stance on a permanent sale with a sell-on clause matched the Bundesliga side’s willingness to commit.

The transfer will be made official once Guiu completes his medical and signs his contract in Germany. Until then, Romano’s announcement stands as the clearest public marker of a move that, for Chelsea, closes a brief and intriguing chapter — and for Guiu, might finally be the start of the one that really matters.
