Marcus Rashford's Return: A Pre-Season Clash with AC Milan

Marcus Rashford is back where the noise is loudest.

The Manchester United winger has been named in Michael Carrick’s travelling squad to face AC Milan in Wroclaw this afternoon, a routine pre-season date suddenly loaded with history, tension and a very personal subplot.

Rashford, Amorim and a fallout that shook Old Trafford

Rashford’s presence on the plane matters because of the man in the opposite dugout. Ruben Amorim, now in charge at AC Milan, endured a bruising spell at Old Trafford, and his relationship with Rashford became the defining fracture of that era.

When Rashford returned to Carrington after that Villa spell, he did not walk back into the fold. He was placed in what was described as a “Bomb Squad” – a group of unwanted players training away from the main squad – and then shipped out again, this time to Barcelona on a season-long loan.

Spain offered a reset of sorts, but the story was still being written in Manchester. During Rashford’s year at Barça, Amorim was sacked by United and replaced by Carrick, a shift that quietly reopened a door many thought had slammed shut.

Rashford was widely expected to make his stay at Barcelona permanent at the end of last season. The option was there: a £26m buy clause sat in the agreement. Barcelona walked away from it. They went for Anthony Gordon instead, leaving Rashford’s future dangling back over Old Trafford.

World Cup return, Dublin absence, Milan ticket

After the World Cup, Rashford reported back to United and spent this week in Dublin with the squad. He did not feature in the game against Leeds, which only fuelled questions about his role under Carrick.

Now comes a clearer sign. He has been selected to travel for the final pre-season fixture against Milan in Poland. It is only a friendly on paper. In reality, it is Rashford walking back into the same orbit as Amorim, this time with a different crest on each chest and a different manager in his corner.

Fans make their verdict clear

If Carrick wanted a reading of the room, he has it.

MEN Sport asked United supporters: “Should Marcus Rashford play against AC Milan on Saturday?” Out of 2,799 votes at the time of writing, 84 per cent said “Yes”. Only 13 per cent were against the idea, with three per cent unsure.

That is not a split fanbase. That is a fanbase asking to see one of its own back on the pitch in United colours, in a game that carries emotional weight even if it does not carry points.

Mainoo, JJ Gabriel and the Amorim shadow

Rashford will not be alone in revisiting old scars. Kobbie Mainoo, who also endured a difficult spell under Amorim at United, is in the travelling squad as well. His rise has been one of the brighter threads of recent seasons, yet he too felt the chill of that previous regime.

Alongside them, teenage forward JJ Gabriel has earned another chance with the first team. His inclusion underlines the blend Carrick is trying to strike: established names seeking redemption, and young talent trying to seize their moment.

Pre-season often drifts by in a blur of fitness drills and half-paced friendlies. This one is different. Rashford is back in the spotlight, Amorim is back in his eyeline, and a simple question hangs over the afternoon in Wroclaw: is this just another warm-up, or the first step in rewriting a United career that once looked finished?
