Marseille Eyes Late Move for Arsenal Keeper Illan Meslier

Marseille have moved onto Premier League turf in their search for a new goalkeeper – and their eyes are fixed firmly on Arsenal’s Illan Meslier.

The Ligue 1 club are weighing up a late-window move for the Frenchman, who only joined the English champions this summer but already finds himself stuck behind a crowded queue of keepers in north London.

From Elland Road mainstay to Emirates understudy

Meslier walked away from Leeds United at the end of his contract, signing for Arsenal on a free last month as back-up to David Raya. He agreed a two-year deal that runs until June 2028 and arrived with serious mileage: 215 appearances across six seasons at Elland Road, plus a central role in Leeds’ promotions to the Premier League in 2020 and again in 2025.

Then it all stalled.

Daniel Farke froze him out of the Leeds side last season. Meslier has not played a minute of competitive football since March 2025, a remarkable drought for a goalkeeper once seen as one of the brightest young prospects in his position.

Arsenal offered a reset. But even there, the path has not cleared.

Meslier featured only as a substitute in pre-season against Girona, Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund. When the serious business started, it was Kepa Arrizabalaga – not Meslier – who made the bench for the Community Shield and Friday’s league win over Coventry.

For a 26-year-old in his supposed prime, that is a warning sign.

Marseille sense an opening

In France, Marseille have taken notice. Foot Mercato report that the club have been alerted to Meslier’s “precarious situation” and are exploring what would be a bold late move before the window shuts.

The need is clear. Bruno Genesio has Jeffrey de Lange as his undisputed No.1, but behind him the options are thin. De Lange is currently the only senior goalkeeper in the squad, with Jelle Van Neck and Theo Vermot yet to make a first-team appearance for the club.

Marseille’s hierarchy are said to have placed Meslier near the top of their shortlist as they hunt experienced cover and competition for De Lange. They like his profile, his size, his Premier League and promotion pedigree – even if he has barely played in the last year.

The admiration is strong. The finances are not so simple.

Reports in France stress that Marseille may first need to trim their squad and cut the wage bill before they can table a concrete offer. Any move would likely come late, and only once space has been created.

Proud words, uncertain future

Meslier sounded every inch the long-term project when he signed for Arsenal.

“I’m extremely happy,” he told the club’s official channels on arrival. “It’s a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England.

“I’m very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I’ve got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.”

Those are not the words of a player expecting to leave quickly. Yet football careers move fast, and depth charts move even faster. Raya remains first choice. Kepa has the manager’s trust as deputy. Meslier, for now, is watching.

Arsenal’s reshaped squad

His situation unfolds against the backdrop of a busy summer at the Emirates.

Arsenal have reinforced their title-winning squad with Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa, arriving from Newcastle, Club Brugge and Aston Villa respectively. They have also exercised their £35 million option to sign Piero Hincapie permanently after his loan from Bayer Leverkusen.

At the same time, Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, Christian Norgaard and Karl Hein have all been allowed to depart, underlining a ruthless drive to refine a group expected to compete for trophies on multiple fronts.

Where does Meslier fit into that picture? As a long-term challenger? As tradeable depth? Or as a short-lived experiment who could be moved on before he ever plays a competitive game?

Marseille are ready to test Arsenal’s answer.
