Martin O’Neill remains in hospital after what Celtic described as a “small procedure”, with the 74-year-old expected to be discharged within the next couple of days.

The club released a brief statement in an attempt to calm growing speculation around their manager, who was on the touchline as recently as Monday, guiding Celtic to a 1-0 win over Dundee in their Scottish Premiership opener at Celtic Park.

“In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O'Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital,” the club said on social media, adding that they “would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two”. Celtic also passed on O’Neill’s thanks for the messages of support and asked that the privacy of the manager and his family be respected.

No details have been given on the nature of the operation, but the timing underlines O’Neill’s relentless commitment. Only weeks into a new one-year deal, and fresh from steering Celtic to a league and Scottish Cup double, the veteran manager had thrown himself straight back into the grind of a new campaign. Now, for a moment at least, the focus shifts from tactics and touchlines to recovery.

O’Neill’s presence back in the Celtic dugout has already felt like a throwback and a jolt of electricity rolled into one. When he returned in October last year, 20 years after his first, trophy-laden spell in Glasgow, it stunned much of Scottish football.
