Mason Greenwood Investigated by UEFA After Fenerbahce's Chaos

Mason Greenwood faces a fresh investigation from UEFA after Fenerbahce’s fiery Champions League play-off win away to Lyon descended into chaos at full-time.

The Turkish club confirmed that European football’s governing body has opened disciplinary proceedings against Greenwood, midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and the club itself, following the stormy second leg at the Groupama Stadium, which Fenerbahce won 2-1 at the end of August.

Tunnel chaos after final whistle

What should have been a night remembered for Fenerbahce’s return to the Champions League spotlight instead turned ugly once the whistle went.

Greenwood is being investigated for his involvement in a post‑match confrontation, while Guendouzi is accused of provoking Lyon supporters as he left the pitch. The flashpoint did not stop on the grass. It spilled straight down the tunnel.

Players and staff from both sides became embroiled in the melee. In the footage, a figure wearing what appeared to be a Lyon tracksuit emerged and seemed to launch a flying kick in the direction of Guendouzi amid the disorder.

On the pitch, Greenwood was also caught up in the chaos as several Lyon supporters tried to force their way towards the playing surface during Fenerbahce’s celebrations.

Fenerbahce later confirmed UEFA had formally opened a case.

“Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second-leg match, a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA concerning our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our Club,” the club said in a statement.

“Our Club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA committees to protect the rights and interests of both our players and Fenerbahce. All required information, documents, and defences will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our Club. We present this to the public for information.”

Guendouzi: “They insulted my family”

Guendouzi did not hide his anger after the game, pointing the finger squarely at sections of the home crowd.

“You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children – even before the match – and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet,” he said.

“Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes – even longer if you count the warm-up – they were insulting my family.

“That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful.”

Head coach Ismail Kartal backed his midfielder publicly, framing the response as a collective show of unity.

“As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about,” he said.

Greenwood’s new chapter under scrutiny

For Greenwood, the investigation comes just as his career in Turkey had begun to gather momentum.

The former Manchester United forward, who joined Fenerbahce from Marseille on a four‑year deal in July, played his part in helping the club reach the Champions League main draw for the first time since 2009.

Fenerbahce now step into a heavyweight league phase featuring AS Roma, Aston Villa, Slavia Praha, Liverpool, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.

With United also back in the competition, the possibility lingers in the background: if both sides navigate the league phase, Greenwood could one day line up in Europe against the club where his story first exploded into view.
