Matteo Guendouzi Receives Four-Match Ban After Brawl

Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been hit with a four-match ban in European competition – though half of it is suspended – and a 50,000 euro (£43,000) fine for his role in the ugly post-match brawl that followed the club’s Champions League play-off win at Lyon.

The storm broke after Fenerbahce’s aggregate 3-2 victory, which sealed their place in the league stage. Tempers boiled over, and Uefa’s disciplinary arm has now delivered its verdict.

Guendouzi’s punishment covers “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and violating the basic rules of decent conduct”. Two of the four games are suspended, with the sanction hanging over him during a one-year probationary period.

Mason Greenwood, Fenerbahce’s English striker, has also been sanctioned. He received a one-match suspended ban, subject to the same one-year probation, and a 30,000 euro (£26,000) fine for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”. The forward only joined Fenerbahce in the summer from Marseille, a move that already carried an edge given the French club’s fierce rivalry with Lyon.

Lyon have not escaped either. Goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira has been handed a five-match touchline ban in Uefa competitions, with two of those games suspended. Uefa described his actions during the clashes as a “serious assault”.

Both clubs have also been fined 50,000 euros apiece for their teams “violating the general and basic rules of conduct”, a clear signal from European football’s governing body that the chaotic scenes in the aftermath of the tie crossed a line it will not ignore.
