Mattie Pollock Calls for Unity as Watford Faces Pressure

Mattie Pollock has called for unity in the Watford dressing room as the club’s winless run stretched to five games in all competitions and early-season optimism gave way to anxiety.

The Hornets slipped to 18th in the fledgling Championship table after Saturday’s narrow defeat at West Brom, a result that deepened the sense of frustration around Vicarage Road. The captain, appointed in July, did not sugar-coat the situation – but he was clear about the response he expects.

"We need to stick together as a team," Pollock said, stressing that togetherness, not panic, must define the next few weeks.

Two home fixtures now loom large. Alessio Dionisi’s side host Preston at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night, then welcome Stoke City on Saturday. For a squad that has not won since the opening day, those games already feel heavy with significance.

"They're two massive games," Pollock told BBC Three Counties Radio. "We've come up short in the last two away games, so we've got to make sure we put things right in front of our crowd and get the fans with us."

Watford opened the 2026-27 campaign in style, beating Southampton and hinting at a season of genuine promise. Since then, the momentum has stalled: two draws and two defeats in the league have dragged them down the standings, while a much-changed side were thrashed 5-1 by Peterborough in the EFL Cup last month.

That sequence has left a young captain carrying real responsibility in a restless environment. Pollock, though, embraced it.

"I'll do everything in my power to make sure the lads stick together," he said. "We came up short at the weekend, but if we can start scoring goals and winning games, then it can still be an exciting season."

The message is clear. The table may say 18th, the form guide may be unforgiving, but Watford’s campaign will be defined by what happens next, under the lights at Vicarage Road.
