Mauro Icardi Linked to Everton: A Potential Free-Agent Solution Up Front

Everton’s search for a striker has taken a familiar turn: late, urgent and into the free-agent market. This time, the name on the table is a heavyweight. Mauro Icardi, once the ruthless finisher at Inter Milan and more recently at Galatasaray, has been offered to the club as they scramble for firepower.

David Moyes, back on Merseyside and short of options through the middle, needs help. Desperately. With Thierno Barry the only natural centre-forward in the senior squad, Everton are one injury or suspension away from a full-blown crisis at number nine.

Free-agent gamble with a big reputation

With the transfer window shut, Everton’s recruitment team at Hill Dickinson Stadium have turned to the pool of unattached players. Icardi, 33 and out of contract after leaving Galatasaray at the end of the 2025-26 season, has quickly risen towards the top of that list.

According to TyC Sports journalist German Garcia Grova, speaking on 7 September, Icardi has been formally offered to the Merseyside club. The message from the player’s camp is clear enough: they are open to Everton being his next stop and his first taste of English football.

The move would mark a new chapter for a striker whose career has already taken in some of Europe’s most demanding stages. Inter Milan made him a star. Paris Saint-Germain added medals and pressure. Galatasaray gave him a platform to keep scoring regularly. Now, a Premier League relegation fight could be his next test.

Still scoring, even in a supporting role

Icardi is no longer the explosive, penalty-box whirlwind who terrorised Serie A defences in his mid-20s. But the numbers from last season show there is plenty left in the tank.

For Galatasaray, he hit 16 goals in all competitions, often starting on the bench with Victor Osimhen preferred as the main man in the Super Lig. Even with limited minutes, Icardi delivered 14 league goals, posting a 24 per cent conversion rate and outperforming his xG of 10.53, according to Sofascore.

That is what Everton are eyeing: not pace, not chaos, but a cold, clinical finisher who still punishes mistakes. He may not run the channels like a younger forward, yet in and around the box he continues to operate with the same old sharpness.

He also brings recent experience at the top level. Last season he faced the likes of Liverpool and Juventus in the Champions League, a reminder that he can still handle high-intensity games and big-name opponents. Dropping into a scrap in L3 would not intimidate him.

Why Moyes might roll the dice

For Moyes, the logic is simple. Barry is talented but raw, still learning the craft of leading the line in one of Europe’s toughest leagues. His movement has promise, but his finishing has let him down in recent weeks. Chances have come and gone. Points have slipped.

Icardi, by contrast, lives for those moments. One chance, one goal – that has long been his calling card. He will not transform Everton’s build-up play, but he could transform their results in tight games where they create little and need someone who makes half-chances count.

There are obvious caveats. Age. Wages. Fitness. The risk of dropping a big personality into a dressing room already under strain. Everton also have the option of holding their nerve, waiting until January to reassess targets when the market opens again.

But the reality is stark. The failed deadline-day move for Folarin Balogun has left a hole up front, and the league will not pause while Everton weigh up their options. Points are on the line now.

So the question lingers over Hill Dickinson Stadium: do they move for Mauro Icardi immediately and bet on his finishing to drag them through the autumn, or gamble that they can survive until January without a proven goalscorer?
