Kylian Mbappé Responds to Criticism Over Defensive Effort Ahead of Champions League Clash

Kylian Mbappé spoke out against criticism of his defensive contributions just before Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League opener against Inter Milan. The French forward acknowledged that both he and the team need to get better when not in possession, but dismissed the notion that he and Vinícius Júnior alone should shoulder the responsibility.

Pressing Comparison Draws Response

During the pre-match press conference, Mbappé was questioned about Real Madrid's pressing tactics and was compared to forwards like Ousmane Dembélé and Raphinha, who are often praised for their defensive work rate. Mbappé quickly disputed the comparison, highlighting that each player has different roles and strengths on the field. He emphasized that defending is a collective effort involving the entire team.

Mbappé Challenges Focus on Him and Vinícius

"Only me and Vini?" Mbappé asked rhetorically. He then added with a hint of humor, "I can play the fool and tell you that I score more goals than the two you mentioned, and that they have to score more goals to be like me. Everyone is different."

Though he admitted improvement is needed, Mbappé stressed it is part of Real Madrid's standards.

Improvement Needed but Not Through Comparisons

Mbappé said he prefers not to judge his game by comparing every aspect with other forwards. "I want to do things intelligently and say that, of course, I have to improve and all that. But I don't like to compare because I think I do many things that others don't." He broadened the topic beyond attack, stating that all players must contribute defensively.

"But I agree that, of course, I and all the Real Madrid players have to improve in this aspect to help the defense and so that we can get fewer chances and fewer goals," he said.

Mbappé also pointed out that controlling possession better could reduce pressure on the defense and increase scoring chances.

"But I also think that we need to manage things better with the ball to create more scoring opportunities," he remarked.

He described constant development as a natural demand at a club aiming to be world-class.

"That's the life of a top-level team that wants to be the best in the world. There are many things you have to improve every day, and that's just how it is."
