Mexico Fans’ World Cup Victory Sparks Seismic Tremors in Mexico City

After Mexico secured a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in a tense World Cup knockout match, the jubilant celebrations of fans caused noticeable tremors in Mexico City. Seismologists observed these vibrations as "significant" and linked them directly to the crowd's excitement.

The Digital Platform for Early Warning and Comprehensive Risk Management (SASSLA) in Mexico reported that the eruption of joy and loud cheering following the two goals created measurable ground vibrations near the Azteca Stadium. The first goal by Julián Quiñones and the second by Raúl Jiménez were both recorded on several seismographs, according to SASSLA's posts on X.

Despite the festive mood, the celebrations turned tragic when three people lost their lives in Mexico City amid the massive crowd. Close to one million supporters flooded the streets to celebrate Mexico’s progression to the Round of 16 in the tournament.

Human Activity Causing Earthquake-like Effects

These “human-induced earthquakes” aren’t unheard of. They have appeared before during massive sporting events and concerts, or even from activities like high-rise construction, groundwater extraction, and fracking. A 2024 study in Seismological Research Letters discussed similar phenomena, noting that synchronized crowd movements can generate unique vibration signals mimicking real tremors.

One notable example is the 2023 Taylor Swift concert, where over 70,000 fans produced strong seismic vibrations detected within 9 kilometers of the venue. Scientists at the time attributed the signals mainly to crowd motion responding to the music.

How These Vibrations Are Recorded

SASSLA explained that the seismic stations near the stadium captured an "outstanding artificial signal" due to the mass jumping and cheering. While not actual earthquakes, these vibrations result from the rapid, collective footfalls of thousands of people, which generate short surface waves detectable by sensitive equipment.

Sismo Alerta Mexicana noted on X that if someone walks near a seismograph, it registers; multiple people jumping simultaneously near it amplifies the effect. These instruments are extremely sensitive, able to detect quakes worldwide, making it easy to pick up vibrations caused by crowds.

Implications for Science and Engineering

Researchers believe studying such artificial tremors could improve seismic monitoring technology, helping distinguish between natural earthquakes and human-caused vibrations. This knowledge might also contribute to better understanding Earth's subsurface structures and inform the design of buildings and venues that can handle vibrations more effectively.
