Mike Solan Set to Lead Offaly Footballers

Mike Solan is poised to take charge of the Offaly footballers after being put forward by the Faithful County’s management committee as their choice for the top job.

The former Longford boss, who left that role earlier this month, will go before the county board for ratification at its September meeting. If approved, he will be handed a three-year term as Offaly look to reset after the departure of their previous joint-management team.

Solan will not be coming in alone. Highly regarded coach Joe Keane – with experience in Mayo, Sligo and Longford setups – is set to join his backroom team, bringing a strong tactical pedigree and familiarity with the inter-county grind.

Alongside him will be Offaly great Nigel Dunne, a figure steeped in the county’s football story. Dunne recently underlined his coaching credentials by guiding the Faithful minors to a landmark Leinster title in 2025, ending a 35-year wait for provincial glory at that grade and injecting real optimism into the county’s underage structures.

Solan’s CV already carries significant inter-county experience. He previously managed the Mayo Under-21s and also served on Andy Moran’s management team in Leitrim, building a reputation as a modern, organised coach comfortable working with emerging talent.

He steps into the vacancy created when joint-managers Mickey Harte and Declan Kelly stood down last month. Harte, who came on board in 2024 to work alongside Kelly – already in place from the previous season – had weighed up staying for another year before both men ultimately opted to walk away.

Now the county turns to Solan and a fresh ticket. The question is simple: can this new regime turn Offaly’s recent promise into something more substantial over the next three seasons?
