Mikel Arteta Confirms Max Dowman Will Stay at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta is in no rush to send Max Dowman anywhere.

The Arsenal manager has underlined that the club will keep the 16-year-old under close watch in north London for now, despite outside noise suggesting a January loan could be on the horizon once the teenager signs his first professional deal.

Dowman delivered another jolt of excitement on Tuesday night, scoring twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win at Ipswich Town. It was his first appearance of the season, but it looked like a continuation of last year’s breakthrough rather than a fresh start.

At 16, he has already played 13 times for the first team in 2025-26, even tasting Champions League football while juggling his GCSEs. Those school days are now behind him. The next step is a professional contract, already agreed and due to be signed when he turns 17 on New Year’s Eve.

That milestone has fuelled talk that Arsenal might immediately look to loan him out for regular senior minutes. Arteta’s stance cuts through that speculation.

“We haven't really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have him in the squad, that we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there,” he said.

The plan is structured but not rigid. Arsenal will review Dowman’s situation twice a year, weighing his needs against the squad’s demands.

“We will evaluate every six months, where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision.

“It depends on a lot of factors — what he needs and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes.

“We have to be open but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”

That last line is telling. Arteta wants Dowman affecting games at Arsenal, not just ticking development boxes somewhere else.

The Spaniard knows the pull of an early move. He left for Paris at 17 and referenced how varied those paths can be.

“There have been many cases of that age when they have gone out and been successful and others not,” he said. “In my particular case I was 17 when I went to Paris.

“It depends on the atmosphere that you find there and how much the coach believes in you, whether you go there just to be part of a squad or play minutes. Which country, it depends.

“But now he is in a good place, let's keep him here.”

For now, that is the clearest indication of Arsenal’s thinking: Dowman’s future can wait. His present is at the Emirates.
