Mikel Merino Leads Arsenal with Pride in Carabao Cup

Mikel Merino walked out at Portman Road with the armband on and a grin he could barely hide. Captain of Arsenal again. Carabao Cup or not, it clearly meant something.

Handed the matchday captaincy by Mikel Arteta for the second time, the 30-year-old midfielder did not try to play it down.

“It’s a huge honour to represent the club in this way,” he said, fully aware of the names that have worn that band before him. “Many legends have done it before me. I know it is just a Carabao Cup game, but to me it is happiness.”

Merino had already tasted this responsibility once, in last season’s Carabao Cup last-16 win over Brighton. This felt like a continuation, not a one-off. He responded like a leader, too, driving the team from midfield and capping his night with a 58th-minute goal in the win over Ipswich Town.

The goal might have headlined his evening. He didn’t let it. His thoughts went straight to the teenager who stole a slice of club history.

Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman became Arsenal’s second youngest goalscorer in the competition, a landmark that lit up the away end and clearly impressed his captain.

“He is honestly an unbelievable talent,” Merino said. “He is so young and so alive. You can see the joy in his eyes when he plays football.”

There was no attempt to pretend Dowman is the finished article. Just a clear message about what comes next.

“Obviously there are things to improve as he is very young,” Merino added. “He needs to keep listening and learning from us veterans. We are here to support him and we are going to get him to the best version of himself, for sure.”

On a night that underlined Merino’s growing influence in Arteta’s dressing room, it was the blend of pride and protection in his words that stood out. The armband sat on his sleeve; the future, in the shape of Dowman, ran ahead of him.
