Milan's Ambitious Move for Ruben Dias: A Challenging Deal
Milan eye ambitious move for Ruben Dias – but deal looks remote
Ruben Amorim wants a defender. Milan know they cannot drift into the new season with the same fragility at the back, and the search for a cornerstone has taken them to an unlikely name: Ruben Dias.
The Manchester City centre-back has appeared on Milan’s radar after a summer of intense contact with Jorge Mendes. The Portuguese super-agent has been a regular presence around the Rossoneri in recent weeks, holding talks on several fronts. Out of those conversations, the idea of testing City’s resolve over Dias has surfaced.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, initial discussions about a potential deal have already taken place, presumably with Mendes at the heart of them. No formal offer, no advanced negotiation – but the door has been pushed, if only slightly.
From Milan’s perspective, the profile makes sense. Dias, 29, is understood to be on City’s transfer list and his age is a major attraction for the Italians: old enough to bring leadership, young enough to anchor the defence for years. His recent injury issues have also chipped away at his market value, and Milan see an opening in a defender whose stock is not quite what it was two seasons ago.
That is the theory. Reality is harsher.
City have already lost Rodri this summer and are in no mood to casually part with another pillar of their spine. Letting Dias go would mean ripping out a second key piece of Pep Guardiola’s structure in the same window, a scenario the English champions are expected to resist.
Then comes the financial wall. Even with his dip in form and fitness, Dias would command a fee and salary at the very top end of Milan’s structure. For a club that still works within tight parameters and carefully managed investments, bridging that gap looks extremely difficult.
The Mendes connection explains how the idea was born. The numbers and City’s situation explain why it may never grow beyond that.
