Mohamed Salah Welcomes Son Leil Amid Career Changes

Mohamed Salah has slipped quietly back into Liverpool, not for a transfer twist or a farewell tour, but for something far more personal. His wife has given birth to their third child – and their first son – in the city that became their family’s second home.

The former Liverpool forward, now 34 and playing his football in Turkey with Trabzonspor, returned to the UK for the birth, with reports placing the family in the north west when the baby arrived. The news broke not through a club statement or a polished press release, but via a family post.

Salah’s sister, Rabab, shared the update on social media, revealing that the couple have named their son Leil – a name that translates to “night” in Arabic. A simple message, but one that instantly lit up timelines across Egypt, Liverpool and beyond.

It marks a new chapter for Salah and his wife Magi, his childhood sweetheart from their hometown of Nagrig. The pair married in 2013, long before he became a global star and Premier League icon, and have built their family around the demands and turbulence of an elite football career.

Their eldest daughter, Makka, arrived in 2014, at the very start of Salah’s rise through European football. Kayan followed in 2020, by which time he was firmly established as one of Liverpool’s modern greats. The celebrations in the Salah household are mirrored in another Trabzonspor home. Club president Ertugrul Dogan revealed that both Salah and teammate Andre Onana have welcomed new arrivals.

Speaking to 61saat, Dogan said: "After the (Amed SK) match, I travelled abroad with Salah and Andre Onana. Both of them had new children, Onana had twins and Salah a baby boy. I congratulate their families and their wives.”

Behind the scenes, life is changing fast. On the pitch, it has been anything but calm.

Salah only joined Trabzonspor in the summer after a dramatic end to his Liverpool stay. He and the club agreed to terminate his contract a year early, tearing up the two-year deal he had signed in 2025. The plan, at one stage, had been to stay on Merseyside for another season. He never hid how deeply Liverpool had embedded itself into their lives. Reflecting on the decision to extend his deal at Anfield at the time, he said: “They feel at home [here]. Trabzonspor suffered a bruising 5-0 aggregate defeat to Hungarian side Ferencvaros in the Europa League play-offs, a result that triggered the sudden departure of head coach Fatih Tekke. Salah fronted up after that European exit, posting a statement on social media that underlined both his frustration and his commitment.

"Nothing in my career ever came easy. Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies. Those words now sit alongside the news of his son’s birth, painting a picture of a player juggling a demanding new challenge with the grounding force of family life.
