Moratti's €500m Bid for Messi That Was Never Considered

Massimo Moratti has lifted the lid on one of football’s wildest transfer attempts: a €500 million offer to bring Lionel Messi to Inter back in 2012 – a bid so huge for its time that the player never even bothered to read it.

Speaking to Catalan newspaper Sport, the former Inter president recalled how he tried to prise Messi away from Barcelona at the height of the Argentine’s powers, only to be brushed aside before talks had even begun.

“I did something crazy in 2012, I made Messi an offer worth 500 million euros,” Moratti said. “In that year, this figure was crazy, and I sent Inter's vice-president to Barcelona to negotiate, but Messi did not even open the letter, and did not know the value of the offer. He rejected it without knowing the details.”

The story underlines just how unshakeable Messi’s loyalty to Barcelona was at that point. Moratti knew the forward was deeply attached to the club, yet still decided to test that bond with a sum that would have shattered every existing standard in the market.

The answer was ruthless in its simplicity. No negotiation. No counter. No curiosity.

When the two finally spoke directly, Messi made his stance unmistakably clear. He told Moratti: “I appreciate your interest in me, but I want to retire at Barcelona.”

That line captured the reality of the chase. Moratti had always been aware that Messi’s heart belonged to the Camp Nou. He still tried to tempt him with money, hoping the sheer scale of the offer might spark a rethink. It didn’t. The Argentine refused to move from his conviction that his career should begin and end in a Barcelona shirt.

Football, and Barcelona’s finances, had other ideas. Messi eventually left the Catalan club in 2021, not through choice but because Barcelona, mired in a financial crisis, failed to renew his contract. He joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and later crossed the Atlantic to sign for Inter Miami.

The dream he once voiced to Moratti – retiring at Barcelona – never came true.

What did come true was everything else. Messi spent the bulk of his career at Barcelona and became the greatest player in the club’s history, the symbol of an era that delivered a haul of trophies few clubs can match. Among them, the 2015 Champions League title, secured with Messi at the heart of a devastating front three alongside Luis Suarez and Neymar.

In that context, Moratti’s failed €500m gamble feels less like a missed opportunity and more like a snapshot of a time when Messi’s bond with Barcelona looked unbreakable, even in the face of football’s most extravagant offer.
