What Can France Expect from Morocco at the 2026 World Cup?
Four years after making history by reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time, Morocco is heading to North America with even higher hopes. The squad boasts greater depth and quality than the team that impressed in Qatar.
A Change in Leadership
History might be repeating itself as Morocco switches coaches again, just like before their impressive run in 2022. In March, Mohamed Ouahbi, who led Morocco’s Under-20 team to a World Cup victory last year, took over from Walid Regragui.
This coaching change leaves limited time for the team to adapt to Ouahbi’s style. Early signs show some progress: in late March, Morocco drew 1-1 with Ecuador and defeated Paraguay 2-1. Ouahbi favors a 4-2-3-1 formation that can shift into a 4-2-2-2, creating space especially for captain Achraf Hakimi on the right wing.
Living Up to Expectations
Back in 2022, few expected Morocco to go so far. Now ranked among the world’s top 10 teams, the pressure mounts. Ouahbi acknowledges this, saying he feels honored and ready to work with seriousness, humility, determination, and patriotism to push the team forward.
The team has already shattered several barriers, but January brought turmoil. During the Africa Cup of Nations final, Senegal players walked off protesting a penalty given to Morocco. After a delay, Morocco missed a decisive spot kick and Senegal won 1-0. Yet two months later, the Confederation of African Football awarded the title to Morocco. Senegal has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. This controversial moment remains a heavy weight, potentially affecting team morale if results falter.
“We all lived a trauma as Moroccans. That final was a difficult moment, but I think what matters the most is continuity,” Ouahbi said. Continuity means matching or exceeding their Qatar achievements.
The Moroccan Fans’ Impact
Like in previous tournaments, Moroccan fans will be a strong presence in the stands across the USA. A large diaspora lives in states like New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, as well as in Canada. This community ensures vibrant support and atmosphere around Morocco’s matches, with the national anthem sure to be a standout moment.
Expect Morocco to bring energy and passion to the 2026 World Cup, with a team eager to prove it belongs among football’s elite.
