Napoli's Ambitious Move for Gabriel Jesus: Transfer Tetris Unfolds
Napoli are trying to pull off one of the more intricate moves of the summer – and at the heart of it sits Gabriel Jesus.
The Serie A club have locked on to the Arsenal forward as a priority target, but this is not a simple case of making an offer and waiting for an answer. As reported by TuttoMercatoweb, Napoli have been forced into a kind of “transfer Tetris”, shifting pieces around their squad and wage bill just to create the space needed for the Brazilian.
Lukaku exit unlocks the move
The key move has already dropped into place. Out-of-favour striker Lukaku has completed a permanent switch to Fenerbahce in a deal worth around €6 million (£5.1m). His departure doesn’t just clear a squad slot; it slices a significant figure off Napoli’s wage commitments and opens the door for a serious push for Jesus without risking financial breaches.
Napoli are not stopping there. Further exits in attack, with Lorenzo Lucca among those who could still be moved on, are being weighed up as the club look to free up even more resources for what would be a sizeable investment in a new No 9.
All of this is being driven by Massimiliano Allegri’s desire to reshape his forward line. Back in Italy and tasked with retooling a side that wants to challenge again, Allegri has identified Jesus as an ideal fit for his new-look attack.
Agent’s visit sparks noise
The noise around the deal spiked when Jesus’ agent, Giovanni Branchini, was seen at Napoli’s pre-season training camp in Castel di Sangro. Branchini insisted he was only there to visit Allegri, but his presence at such a delicate moment in the window inevitably intensified speculation that talks are edging closer.
Napoli, after Lukaku’s exit, now find themselves in a position of strength. The funds are ready. The squad is being cleared. The target is defined.
Arsenal ready to cash in
On the other side of the deal, Arsenal are open for business. With Jesus entering the final 12 months of his contract at the Emirates Stadium, the club are prepared to sell now rather than lose him for nothing next summer. The Gunners are understood to be asking for around €20m (£17m) for the former Manchester City forward.
Jesus is one of Arsenal’s highest earners, on wages in the region of £265,000 a week, and trimming that figure from the books would give Mikel Arteta more room to manoeuvre as he looks to strengthen other areas of his squad.
Injuries have disrupted Jesus over the past year, and his status in North London has shifted. He has slipped behind both Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres in Arteta’s attacking hierarchy, a stark change for a player once viewed as a central pillar of the project.
Jesus open to Napoli switch
Crucially for Napoli, TuttoMercatoweb report that Jesus is open to the move. More than that, he is said to be willing to reduce his sizeable weekly wage to make the transfer happen, a clear signal of how attractive he finds the prospect of leading the line in Naples.
If Napoli can agree a fee with Arsenal, the path is already mapped out: Jesus would travel to Italy for his medical and, once the formalities are complete, slot into Allegri’s new attack.
The plan is bold. Jesus, alongside Rasmus Hojlund, forming a fresh strike partnership under Allegri’s guidance – a rebuilt frontline designed to drag Napoli back into the thick of the Serie A title conversation.
Now it comes down to one final question: can Napoli fit the last piece of this transfer puzzle into place before someone else makes a move for Arsenal’s No 9?
