Newcastle Targets Geny Catamo for January Transfer Plans

Newcastle United’s summer was all about youth and upside. Now the recruitment team is already looking towards January, and one name has moved firmly onto their radar: Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo.

The 25-year-old Mozambique international has caught the eye with a sharp start to the season in Portugal, and Newcastle have ramped up their checks in recent weeks ahead of the winter window, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey.

Newcastle are far from alone. Bailey reports that Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all watched Catamo, while Aston Villa are also continuing to monitor his situation.

The interest isn’t coming out of nowhere. Catamo has opened the campaign in strong form, producing two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances for Sporting. That kind of end product, from a wide player in a major European league, tends to travel quickly across scouting networks.

Newcastle have been aware of his situation for some time. Bailey notes that several clubs made contact with the player’s camp earlier in the summer and have kept tabs on his progress since. The player keeps giving them reasons to return.

Sporting’s stance: pay the clause

The real hurdle sits in Lisbon. Sporting have taken a hard line over Catamo’s future and have so far refused to negotiate below his release clause.

Sunderland discovered that the hard way. The Black Cats made Catamo a priority target in the last window but walked away when Sporting insisted that any buyer must trigger the €60 million (£51 million) clause in full. That figure was simply too steep for the Championship club.

Sunderland’s interest has not disappeared, but the landscape has changed. Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa now bring serious Premier League competition into the chase, all of them working under far bigger financial umbrellas than the Wearside club.

Catamo open to England move

One thing is tilting the situation towards England. Catamo himself is understood to be keen on a Premier League move.

“We understand Catamo is more than open to the possibility of moving to the Premier League, with the winger attracted by the prospect of testing himself in England,” Bailey reported.

That willingness will encourage Newcastle and the rest of the chasing pack. A player pushing for a move can sometimes shift even the most stubborn negotiating stance.

What happens in January?

For now, there is no sign that Newcastle have put an offer on the table or entered formal talks with Sporting. Everything points towards a watching brief, data collected, reports filed, decisions still to be made.

The key question hangs over Sporting’s resolve. If the Portuguese club stick rigidly to the €60 million clause, any deal becomes a major call for Newcastle and their Premier League rivals. If they soften in January, the race could ignite quickly.
