Newcastle Targets La Masia Midfielder Guille Fernández

Newcastle’s youth drive shows no sign of slowing, and now the club is closing in on one of La Masia’s brightest young midfielders.

After a summer already defined by teenage arrivals, the Magpies are reportedly in advanced talks to sign 18-year-old Guille Fernández from Barcelona, as Matthias Jaissle tries to balance long-term planning with the urgent need for ready-made quality before the window shuts.

Another La Masia talent on Tyneside’s radar

Newcastle have already brought in 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba to bolster their midfield options. On Wednesday, reports linked them strongly with 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate, underlining just how aggressively the club is targeting the next generation.

Now, according to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, Newcastle are “close” to landing another 18-year-old midfielder, this time from Barcelona’s famed academy.

“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” Fernández explained. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”

The message is clear: Barcelona are willing to let some of their prospects leave, but not without keeping a hand on the wheel.

Barcelona want control, Newcastle want potential

Guille Fernández has yet to appear for Barça’s senior side, but he has climbed steadily through La Masia and established himself in the reserve setup. Comfortable in multiple central roles, he is already a Spain Under-19 international and viewed as one of the more versatile midfielders in his age group.

Heading into the 2027–28 season, his market value sits at around €3 million. He is officially part of Barcelona’s first-team roster, but the path to regular minutes in Xavi’s midfield is steep and crowded. That congestion has opened the door for clubs like Newcastle to pounce.

Fernández’s report makes it clear Barcelona do not want a clean break. Any deal is expected to include some form of buy-back clause, allowing the Catalan club to retain a measure of control over his future if he explodes in England.

No specific transfer fee or buy-back figures have been disclosed, and with “other teams bidding,” the final price could climb if a genuine auction develops around the player. For now, though, the suggestion that he is “close to Newcastle” points to the Magpies being firmly in the driving seat.

A rebuild with two tracks

This is not a scattergun approach. Newcastle are building along two tracks at once.

On one side, there is the youth-focused rebuild: Steur, Bamba, Diabate, and now potentially Guille Fernández. On the other, there is the push for an experienced midfielder who can step straight into the first team and help offset the loss of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

That search has led them to another La Masia product: Man City’s Nico Gonzalez. While González would arrive as a ready-made option for Jaissle’s core XI, Fernández would be more of a developmental signing, a player to grow into the project rather than define it on day one.

The strategy is bold. It leans heavily on scouting, development, and the belief that Newcastle can turn promising teenagers into Premier League starters. The question now is not whether the club will keep stockpiling prospects.

It is how quickly those bets start paying off on the pitch.
