Newcastle United’s long search for a new midfield anchor is edging towards a decisive moment, with talks for Manchester City’s Nico González accelerating as the Sept. 1 deadline looms.

The club has spent weeks scouring options to cover the possible exits or absences of Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali. On Tuesday, The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed Newcastle had opened negotiations with City for González. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano then stated City were “quite open” to doing business.

Since then, the pace has picked up.

Verbal agreement in place

According to Dutchie Bowen, Newcastle and City have now reached a verbal agreement on a fee: £40 million up front, with a further £5 million in potential bonuses — roughly €46m plus €6m in add-ons. With the framework between the clubs set, Newcastle have moved on to the next stage: trying to lock in personal terms with the 24-year-old midfielder.

If that figure stands, it’s the clearest sign yet that this isn’t just another name on a shortlist. City have already informed González he is free to explore a move, a key signal that the Premier League champions are prepared to let him go rather than keep him as a bit-part option.

For Newcastle, who open their new Premier League campaign this weekend, the timing could hardly be tighter.

Real Madrid enter the rumour mill

Just as the path appeared to clear, a new twist emerged. CaughtOffside reported that Real Madrid have added González to their midfield shortlist after failing to land Rodri, and are also looking at Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

Right now, Madrid’s name feels more like background noise than a direct threat — the sort of late-window rumour that can nudge a price up or strengthen a player’s hand in talks.
