With the new Premier League season closing in, Matthias Jaissle is staring at a depth chart that looks alarmingly thin on both defensive flanks. One, if not two, full-backs are now viewed inside the club as an absolute priority before the window closes.

Newcastle join race for rising Belgian star

Into that urgency steps a new name: Joaquin Seys.

The Magpies have been linked with the 21-year-old Club Brugge left-back, but they are far from alone. According to The Sun, Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Benfica and Porto are all tracking the Belgium international, with several of those clubs already moving beyond the early admiration stage.

“And Seys is also capturing attention from the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle, as well as Portuguese giants Benfica and Porto,” The Sun reported, underlining just how crowded this chase has become.

Seys has quickly grown from prospect to pillar at Club Brugge. Last season he nailed down a regular place, making 25 league appearances and adding nine more in the Champions League. Those performances pushed him onto the biggest stage of all: Belgium’s World Cup squad this summer, where he featured in the quarterfinal defeat to eventual champions Spain.

That kind of rise does not go unnoticed in England.

Rivals move first

Right now, Newcastle appear to be on the fringes of the race rather than at the front of it.

The Sun reports that Manchester United, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all formally checked on Seys’ availability after extensive scouting. No such enquiry from Newcastle is mentioned, suggesting their interest has yet to harden into a concrete move.

“SunSport understands that Man Utd, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all submitted enquiries as to Seys’ availability following extensive scouting,” the outlet reported.

If Newcastle decide to step in, they will not find a bargain waiting for them.

Club Brugge hold Seys on a contract that runs for another three years and, according to the same report, are under no pressure to sell. The Belgian side are said to be ready to demand around €35 million (£30m) for their rising defender.

“Club Brugge are not in a hurry to sell, with three years remaining on Seys’ contract. And the Belgian side are set to demand €35million (£30m) for their rising star,” The Sun added.

Full-back crisis sharpens the decision

For Newcastle, the need is clear.

Seys would offer a fresh option at left-back at a time when Jaissle’s choices are shrinking. The club insist Lewis Hall is not for sale despite interest from Manchester United, a stance that protects a key asset but does nothing to ease the strain on numbers.

On the opposite flank, Tino Livramento is sidelined after suffering an injury on the verge of the World Cup. His absence strips away another senior full-back and piles even more pressure on the recruitment team to move quickly.

Newcastle’s hierarchy must now weigh the price and profile. At €35 million (£30 million), Seys would represent a major outlay on yet another young talent, a continuation of the club’s strategy of building a squad that can grow together over several seasons.

The question hanging over St. James’ Park is simple, but sharp: do they double down on youth again, or pivot towards an experienced defender who can step in and steady things from day one, even if that means someone coming in as a rotational option?

The clock is ticking on that answer.
