Nico Elvedi Joins Leeds United: A New Chapter

Nico Elvedi is already picturing it. The walk through the Elland Road tunnel, the noise swelling, the first sight of the Leeds United crowd. For the club’s new centre-back, that moment has been sold to him as something different, something he has to feel to understand.

“I am very happy to be here, everything is done and I can't wait to play for this club,” the 29-year-old said after completing his move from Borussia Monchengladbach. “It is such a big club with amazing fans and I also can't wait to play in this stadium with the fans.”

The Swiss defender didn’t arrive blind. During the 2026 World Cup, international team-mate Noah Okafor filled him in on life at Leeds, and the conversation clearly stuck.

Okafor, he said, told him “many good things about the club” – enough that Elvedi started digging deeper. He watched clips of Elland Road in full voice, studied the stands, the noise, the colour.

“I saw some videos from the stadium, from the fans, and I love it,” Elvedi admitted. “Everybody told me it is a special moment to go through the tunnel and see the atmosphere. I can't wait to see that.”

Leeds are getting a defender with a clear profile rather than a headline act. Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, German football reporter Christian Hornung painted a picture of a centre-back you can trust rather than one who dazzles.

“He is reliable and tough in one-v-one situations,” Hornung said. “He has a really good tackle and is good at heading. He isn't a magician on the pitch but he does what he can.

“If you pick Nico Elvedi then you know what you get and I think he's a really fantastic player. It's a really good deal for Leeds.”

No tricks, no frills. Just a defender eager for that first walk into the Elland Road roar.
