Juventus Defender Federico Gatti Injured by Fan During Friendly
Federico Gatti’s start to the new Serie A season may have been wrecked not by a crunching tackle, but by a supporter who should never have been on the pitch in the first place.
The Juventus centre-back picked up an ankle injury in a friendly between the first team and the club’s reserve side, in an incident as bizarre as it was avoidable, reported by "Mundo Deportivo".
Celebration turns into chaos
The first half had just ended. The whistle went, the players began to stroll off, and Gatti lingered for a moment to acknowledge the crowd, applauding the fans in the stands.
Behind him, though, the mood shifted. Several supporters broke through and sprinted towards the pitch. Gatti, focused on the stands, never saw them coming.
The first fan to reach the grass tried to stop. He couldn’t. Losing his balance, he skidded across the turf and crashed straight into the defender, sending the Juventus player sprawling to the ground.
What should have been a routine half-time salute turned into a painful collision. Gatti was left clutching his ankle and ended up limping away instead of sharing a light-hearted moment with supporters.
Doubt for Serie A opener
The damage was serious enough to keep Gatti out of training on Tuesday. His presence for Juventus’ Serie A opener against Frosinone now looks highly unlikely, a blow for a player who had completed normal preparations for the new campaign.
For the coaching staff, it is an exasperating problem. This wasn’t the result of fatigue, poor conditioning, or an opponent’s challenge. It came from outside the game itself, in a setting designed to be low-risk and celebratory.
Tradition under scrutiny
Inside the club, questions are now being asked about the way this traditional friendly with the reserve team is staged.
The match is usually framed as a family day, a relaxed curtain-raiser where fans can get close to the players and share in the excitement before the season starts. That same openness has repeatedly encouraged pitch invasions, turning a festive backdrop into a security headache.
Gatti’s injury has pushed those concerns to the forefront. Juventus may now be forced to rethink the entire format to ensure that a day meant to unite fans and players doesn’t again end with a first-team regular hobbling off the pitch.
