Mamelodi Sundowns vs Marumo Gallants: Clash of Expectations
Mamelodi Sundowns head into their clash with Marumo Gallants carrying the weight of expectation – and a few bruises.
The African champions are unbeaten this season, but the sheen isn’t spotless. Five goals conceded in their last three competitive games has turned what is usually a watertight defence into something far more inviting. They keep getting results. They also keep giving opponents a sniff.
Gallants, though, arrive with problems of their own.
Sundowns juggle injuries and opportunity
Teboho Mokoena has been nursing the knock he picked up in the MTN8 quarter-final win over Polokwane City, which already cost him a place in the victory over Kaizer Chiefs. His inclusion in the possible XI suggests Sundowns are at least hopeful he can be patched up in time, but his fitness looms as a key subplot.
New signing Siyanda Ndlovu has shaken off a minor niggle and came off the bench against Chiefs. That short cameo might now open the door to a first start. The same goes for Cassius Mailula, who has turned late substitute appearances into a personal highlight reel, scoring vital goals in Sundowns’ last two outings. He is pushing hard for a place from the first whistle.
With that in mind, Sundowns’ possible XI reads like this: Ronwen Williams; Khuliso Mudau, Thapelo Johannes, Mothobi Mvala Kekana, Terrence Mashego Basadien; Teboho Mokoena, Marcelo Allende, Neo Van Wyk; Siyanda Ndlovu, Sphelele Mkhulise; Cassius Mailula.
On paper, it’s a side built to dominate the ball and suffocate opponents. On current form, it’s also one that can be got at.
Gallants stuck in old battles
Life under new head coach Phuti Mohafe has started with a familiar sinking feeling. One point from their opening two league fixtures – and that against newly promoted Kruger United – has dragged the spectre of another relegation fight straight back into view.
They at least have a goal to show for their efforts now. Thapelo Dhludhlu’s late strike in a 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch finally got them off the mark, even if it only softened the scoreline rather than the blow.
Yet Gallants carry a quiet warning into this game. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has seen enough to know this is no formality.
“First of all, Marumo had and has players that are very interesting,” Cardoso said. “Second, it's true, the coach in the past made life difficult for Sundowns.”
That history matters. Mohafe has previously found ways to frustrate The Brazilians. Cardoso hasn’t forgotten.
Gallants’ possible XI: Washington Mlambo; Tebogo Ntiya-Ntiya, Sibusiso Sikakane, Ntsako Rikhotso, Sifiso Lukhele; Lucky Luthuli, Sibusiso Kunene, Sifiso Mabuza; Thapelo Dhludhlu, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, Tshepo Sihlali.
History favours Sundowns, scars favour Gallants
The league record is brutally one-sided. Sundowns have never lost to Gallants in PSL action, winning 10 times and drawing five. The most recent league meeting ended 3-1 to Sundowns on 17 March 2026.
But there’s a fresher memory that will give Gallants belief.
On 5 October 2025, in the Carling Knockout Cup, Gallants held Sundowns to 0-0 and then edged them 7-6 on penalties after extra time. For a team now hunting their first league win of the season, that shootout triumph over the African champions is a powerful reference point.
Gallants’ current form – L D D D D – underlines their struggle, but also their stubbornness. They don’t win, but they don’t roll over easily either. A draw against Sundowns would be welcomed, even celebrated, and they will set up accordingly.
Sundowns’ own run – D W W D L – tells a different story: a team still racking up results but showing cracks. The goals they have started to leak offer Gallants a sliver of hope.
Sundowns remain the heavyweight in this contest, with the deeper squad, the sharper attack and the dominant head-to-head record. Gallants arrive as underdogs, yet with a coach who has “made life difficult” for this opponent before and a recent cup upset in their back pocket.
One side is trying to stay perfect in the league. The other is just trying to get started. Only one of them can afford another step backwards.
