Jose Mourinho's Key Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep their star winger out of the clutches of Arsenal and the rest of Europe.
Vinicius, 26, had drifted into the final year of his deal at the Bernabeu, a dangerous place for any club to leave one of the world’s elite wide forwards. With his contract running down, he would have been free to walk away next summer. Arsenal, fresh from a Premier League title, were watching closely.
Instead, earlier this month, Vinicius signed a six-year extension and tied his prime years to Madrid. Mourinho is in no doubt about the role he played.
Mourinho’s message: “Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.”
Speaking on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, the 63-year-old, who returned to Madrid for a second spell in charge in June, laid out the conversation that helped swing the decision.
“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said.
“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”
No long sales pitch. No tour of the training ground. Just a reminder of what walking away from the European champions would really mean.
Mourinho believes the work done since his return has also fed into Vinicius’ choice to stay.
“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he added.
From touchline rivals to the same side
The relationship between the two was forged from opposite dugouts.
Last season, Mourinho faced Real Madrid three times in the Champions League while in charge of Benfica. Their second meeting – the first leg of a knockout phase play-off – exploded into controversy and left a mark on everyone involved.
During that match, Real’s players alleged that Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Vinicius, prompting an eight-minute stoppage. Prestianni denied the accusations, and Mourinho, then his manager, stood firmly behind his own player.
“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate,” Mourinho said on El Chiringuito. “If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story.”
Uefa later investigated and issued Prestianni a three-match ban, with a further three games suspended, for homophobic conduct.
The incident left Mourinho walking a tightrope: defending his dressing room while knowing the wider storm around Vinicius, who has repeatedly been subjected to abuse in Spain and across Europe.
Now, with both men under the same banner at Madrid, Mourinho made a point of underlining where he stands.
“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side,” he said.
A year ago, Mourinho was the opposition coach backing his own winger in a bitter European tie. Today, he is the Madrid manager who convinced Vinicius Jr that there is nowhere bigger, nowhere better – and nowhere worth leaving for.
