Leeds United Sign Defender Nico Elvedi for £8.5m

Leeds United have reunited Daniel Farke with a familiar on-field lieutenant, completing the signing of Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m.

The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a three-year contract at Elland Road, ending an 11-year stay in Germany and bringing with him a weight of experience that Leeds have been hunting all summer.

Farke factor seals the deal

Leeds’ head coach was central to the move. Elvedi made no attempt to hide it.

"He is also a big point for this change," the defender said of Farke, with whom he worked at Monchengladbach in the 2022-23 season. "It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now."

That single season together clearly left a mark. Farke knows exactly what he is getting: a composed, tactically disciplined defender comfortable in a possession-based system, and Elvedi knows the demands that will be placed on him from day one.

A decade in Germany, a pillar for Switzerland

Monchengladbach accepted an offer worth an initial £6.8m, with a further £1.7m in add-ons, drawing a line under a long chapter. Elvedi joined the Bundesliga club as a teenager and went on to make 364 appearances, growing into one of their most reliable figures.

His pedigree at international level is just as clear. Elvedi has 73 caps for Switzerland and played every minute of their recent run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, anchoring a back line that handled some of the game’s biggest stages without blinking.

Leeds are not just signing potential. They are importing a defender who has lived a full career at the sharp end.

Reshaping the back line

Elvedi becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer window, following James Trafford, Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic, as the club quietly rebuilds its spine.

His arrival has already triggered movement. Sebastiaan Bornauw has left Elland Road to join Hamburg on a season-long loan, a clear sign that Elvedi is expected to step straight into a major role in Farke’s defensive structure.

The churn has not stopped at the other end of the pitch either. Earlier on Wednesday, striker Joel Piroe completed a season-long loan move to West Ham, trimming Leeds’ attacking options while the focus shifts to balance and solidity.

Experience, familiarity with the manager, and a proven record on the international stage: Elvedi brings all three. Leeds now have to show that this calculated bet on reliability can push them where they want to go.
