Nico Elvedi's Impressive Leeds United Debut

Nico Elvedi walked into English football the hard way – under the lights, away from home, in a cup tie that never really let him breathe.

Leeds United’s summer signing made his debut in the Carabao Cup second-round win over Nottingham Forest and came out of it with exactly what a defender wants: a victory, a clean passage to the next round, and a bruising duel against a seasoned centre-forward.

"It was great. I'm proud of this team after that performance. We deserved this win, but it was a very strong performance from the home team as well. I'm happy we are going through to the next stage," Elvedi said, still processing a first outing that mixed graft with composure.

Forest pushed. Leeds held. The contest down the middle quickly turned into Elvedi versus Chris Wood, a battle of strength and timing that defined much of his night.

"My performance was OK. I had a hard battle with Chris Wood which wasn't easy," he admitted. "I like it when the player I'm marking is strong, and I think I did well. There are still things for me to improve but, for my first game of the season, it was OK."

No self-congratulation, no big declarations. Just the measured verdict of a defender who knows this is only the start.

What shone through just as clearly was how quickly he has settled into life at Leeds. A move after 11 years at Borussia Monchengladbach could easily have felt disorientating. For Elvedi, the dressing room eased the transition.

"I'm so happy to be here. I have some great new team-mates, so it was very easy to come to this club," he said. "Every day is fun coming into the training sessions and playing on the pitch with these good players."

Leaving Germany, though, was no small decision. Monchengladbach shaped his career, his habits, his football identity. Walking away meant closing a long chapter.

"It was hard because that club was my family. I had a lot of good memories there, but this is a new step in my career so I'm happy to be here."

One cup tie down, the league campaign in front of him, and a new defence to anchor. Elvedi has chosen his next step. Now comes the real test: turning a solid debut into a defining role at Leeds United.
