Nico O’Reilly Wins PFA Young Player of the Year

Nico O’Reilly has been hailed as a “shining example” of Manchester City’s academy production line after being crowned PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old full-back collected the award at Manchester’s Opera House, capping a season in which he delivered on the biggest stages. He scored twice in last season’s Carabao Cup final to turn the showpiece in City’s favour, added an FA Cup winner’s medal, and played his part in England’s run to third place at the World Cup.

His latest honour underlines a striking pattern. Five of the last six winners of the PFA Young Player of the Year award have come through City’s academy, with O’Reilly now following Phil Foden (twice), Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.

For those inside the club’s youth system, this one felt personal.

“Seeing Nico win the award was an incredibly proud moment for everyone connected to our academy,” said academy director Thomas Krucken. “His success is testament to the hard work of the academy staff and coaches who guided him on his journey from our Under-9s all the way towards senior football.

“Nico is an inspiration to everyone at the academy. He is a shining example of how to approach the world of football and be successful. We are all really proud of him and want to send our best wishes to him and his family.

“Having five of the past six winners of the PFA Young Player of the Year award from our academy is an extraordinary achievement for us.”

From a boy in City’s Under-9s to a double scorer in a Wembley final and now the PFA’s standout young player, O’Reilly’s rise is becoming the latest reference point for a youth system that shows no sign of slowing.
