Nicolo Tresoldi's Dilemma: Germany or Italy?

Nicolo Tresoldi is in no hurry to choose a flag.

The Club Brugge forward, already capped 24 times for Germany at U21 level, is still weighing up whether his senior future lies with the country that shaped his career or the one of his birth, Italy.

Germany U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo laid out the situation plainly in comments reported by Kicker.
"This is not a question that needs to be asked of me, but I have spoken to him and he said that he still can't make a decision," Di Salvo said.

For now, though, Tresoldi remains in the German setup. The 22-year-old has opted to continue with the U21s, a choice Di Salvo views as a statement in itself.

"And that is a great sign for us," the coach added.

Di Salvo framed Tresoldi’s dilemma as part of a broader shift in modern football, where identity and opportunity often overlap.

"I think the world has changed. 20 or 30 years ago, players didn't have to make these decisions at all," he said. "But the world has become more global, and many players have the opportunity to play for a second or even a third country. If they need time, you have to give them that time."

Tresoldi’s own story underlines that point. Born in Cagliari, he is the son of an Italian father and an Argentine mother of Italian descent. At 13, he moved with his family to Germany, joined Hannover 96, and later obtained German citizenship.

Now established in club football with Club Brugge and a mainstay at U21 level, he stands at the crossroads between the Azzurri and the Nationalmannschaft.

For the moment, Germany still has him in their colours. How long that lasts is entirely up to him.
